General Weather Overview

The climate in Macau can be characterised as humid subtropical. This means the city experiences noticeable seasonal changes: from hot and humid summers to mild and drier winters. Extreme cold is rare here, making the weather generally comfortable for visiting at various times of the year, albeit with distinct differences.

Four seasons are clearly distinguishable in Macau. Summer, typically from May to September, brings high temperatures (averaging 27°C to 29°C) and marks the peak of the rainy season, seeing the highest rainfall and the maximum number of rainy days – up to 26 per month. Autumn (October-November) delights with drier and warmer weather, becoming a comfortable time to visit. Winter, from December to February, is mild and relatively dry, with average temperatures around 16-18°C and minimal rainfall. Spring (March-April) is a time of gradual warming and increasing humidity before the arrival of summer.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Macau is characterised by distinct seasonality, offering visitors diverse climatic conditions throughout the year. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates from a cool 16.4°C in January to a hot 29.0°C in July. The sultriest months are traditionally June, July, and August, when the average temperature steadily stays above 28°C, and maximum values often exceed 30°C. December and January are considered the coolest, with averages around 16-17°C, ensuring a mild and comfortable winter.

The summer months in Macau, from May to September, bring true tropical heat. Average daily temperatures during this period range from 26.8°C in May to a peak of 29.0°C in July. Daytime highs often reach 28.5-30.8°C, while nights remain very warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 25-27°C. Such weather, combined with high humidity, creates a sensation of a hot and sultry summer, ideal for those who love warmth and do not mind humid air.

Winter in Macau, covering the period from December to February, offers significantly milder and cooler conditions. Average temperatures during these months vary from 16.4°C to 17.7°C. During the day, the thermometer usually rises to 19-20°C, and at night it drops to 13-15°C. Daily temperature fluctuations in winter are slightly more noticeable than in summer, averaging 5-6°C, which means pleasant coolness in the evenings and mornings. Overall, winter in Macau is very mild, without frost or severe cold, making it a comfortable time for walking and exploring the city.

Precipitation

Macau experiences distinct seasonality in precipitation, with a clear division into wet and dry periods. This means the amount of rain and its frequency vary significantly throughout the year, which is important to consider when planning a trip. Snow is not characteristic of Macau, so precipitation here falls predominantly as rain.

The rainy season in Macau usually lasts from May to September. During this time, the greatest amount of precipitation falls, and rainy days become a frequent occurrence. The peak of precipitation falls on the summer months: August is the wettest month by rainfall amount (averaging 11 mm), while June and August lead in the number of rainy days – up to 26 days in each. Rains during this period can be intense, often in the form of heavy downpours, which is typical for a humid subtropical climate.

The dry season arrives in Macau from November to February. During these months, precipitation is minimal, and sunny days become significantly more frequent. The driest months are January, November, and December, when only about 1 mm of precipitation falls. December also stands out with the fewest rainy days – averaging just 3 days. Transitional periods, such as March-April and October, demonstrate a gradual change in the nature of precipitation between these two main seasons, with increasing humidity in spring and its decrease in autumn.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Macau, it is important to consider its humid subtropical climate with distinct seasonality. In summer, especially from May to September, when the temperature often rises above 28-30°C and the rainy season is at its peak, you will need light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. Do not forget an umbrella or a light raincoat, as downpours can be frequent and intense. Sunscreen and a hat will also be your faithful companions for protection against the sun, even on cloudy days. Given the large number of rainy days during this period (up to 26 per month), waterproof shoes or quick-drying sandals may prove very useful.

In the cooler months, from December to February, when the average temperature hovers around 16-18°C, it is worth prioritizing layering. Light sweaters, cardigans, long-sleeved t-shirts, and a windbreaker or a not-too-warm jacket will allow you to feel comfortable both outdoors and indoors. Although winters in Macau are mild, evenings and early mornings can be quite fresh. In the transitional seasons, spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November), the weather can be changeable, so the principle of layering will also be relevant. And, of course, regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as Macau invites long and fascinating walks.
