Travelling through Uliastai Airport will be easier and more pleasant if you prepare for some features of this small regional hub in advance. Follow these tips to ensure your flight goes smoothly.
Arrival at the Airport. Despite the airport's modest size, it is recommended to arrive at least 1.5-2 hours before the departure of a domestic flight. This will give you enough time in case of unforeseen circumstances, as the check-in desk schedule may be irregular.
Check-in and Security. Procedures at Uliastai Airport usually go faster than in major hubs. Nevertheless, keep your passport and ticket ready. Security control is standard, but be prepared for manual luggage inspection. Staff generally speak Mongolian; knowing a few basic phrases or having a translation app on your phone can be useful.
Seat Selection. If you want to enjoy stunning views of the Mongolian steppes and mountains from above, choose a window seat. The landscapes during takeoff and landing can be truly breathtaking.
Hand Luggage. Standard rules apply here too: liquids in containers no larger than 100 ml, no sharp objects. Considering you are in Mongolia, refrain from carrying untreated skins, animal bones, or archaeological finds in your hand luggage unless you have special permits for them.
Connecting Passengers. Uliastai Airport mainly serves direct flights to Ulaanbaatar. International or complex domestic transfers through here are extremely unlikely. If you have a further flight planned, it will almost certainly be from the capital's airport, so allow sufficient time for transfer between terminals or airports in Ulaanbaatar.
Customs Control. Since the airport serves domestic flights, there is no customs control here. You will go through all customs formalities at Chinggis Khaan International Airport upon entering or leaving the country.
Saving Time and Money. Book flight tickets in advance, as their cost may rise closer to the departure date. Dining and shopping opportunities at the airport are very limited, so it is better to have a snack in the city and bring sealed snacks with you. Don't forget an empty water bottle, which can be filled after security if a water dispenser is available.
In Case of Flight Delay. Delays, especially due to weather conditions, are not uncommon for regional airports. In case of a delay, contact your airline representative. Keep in mind that the waiting area is small with minimal amenities. Charge all your devices in advance and bring a portable power bank, a book, or other entertainment. Having warm clothes in your hand luggage will also be a plus.
