General Weather Overview

The climate in the city of Al Baha, located in Saudi Arabia, is generally characterized as arid. The temperature regime here features distinct seasonality: summers are hot, and winters are mild. Average annual temperatures range from a comfortable 17-19°C in the winter months (December-February) to a hot 26-29°C during the summer period (May-July), when maximum values can exceed 33°C. Even in the coldest months, night temperatures rarely drop below 12°C.

Precipitation in Al Baha is a rather rare and scarce phenomenon throughout most of the year. Most months are characterized by minimal rainfall, often zero. However, a small period from August to September can be distinguished when the number of "wet days" noticeably increases (up to 18-21 days), although the total amount of precipitation remains low, not exceeding 4 mm per month. This may indicate periods of high humidity or very light drizzle rather than heavy rains. Overall, Al Baha offers sunny weather year-round, making it attractive for those who prefer a dry and warm climate.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Al Baha is characterized by significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, offering diverse conditions for visitors. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature is about 17.2°C, with night lows potentially dropping to 12.5°C and day highs reaching a comfortable 21.9°C. Conversely, the peak heat occurs in June, with an average temperature of 28.6°C. During this period, daytime temperatures often rise to 33.9°C, while night temperatures remain at 23.4°C.

The summer season in Al Baha, covering the period from May to September, is distinguished by high temperatures. In May, the average temperature already reaches 26.3°C, gradually rising towards June. July also remains a very hot month with an average temperature of 28.2°C and maximum values up to 32.7°C. A characteristic feature of the local climate is the noticeable daily temperature fluctuations: the difference between the daytime heat and the night cool can be about 10-11°C. For example, in June, with a daytime maximum of 33.9°C, the night minimum is 23.4°C.

The winter months, from December to February, bring milder and cooler weather to Al Baha. The average temperature in December is 18.2°C (from 13.3°C at night to 23.1°C during the day), and in February – 18.9°C (from 14.0°C at night to 23.7°C during the day). Nights can be quite cool, but daytime temperatures remain pleasant for walks and outdoor activities. Even in the coolest months, the temperature rarely drops to critically low levels, ensuring comfortable conditions for visiting the region.

Precipitation

The city of Al Baha experiences a rather arid climate for most of the year. Precipitation here is an infrequent phenomenon, and its amount is minimal. Winter months, such as January, February, and December, are the driest, with zero precipitation and only 2-4 rainy days. This indicates that even if rain does occur, it is likely to be very weak and short-lived.

A slight increase in precipitation occurs in spring and early summer. In March, April, May, June, and July, about 1 mm of precipitation falls, while the number of rainy days ranges from 5 to 11. This suggests that rains may be more frequent but still very light. The most pronounced, albeit modest, peak in precipitation falls on August and September. In these months, 4 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 21 in August and 18 in September. This is the "wettest" period of the year for Al Baha, although the total amount of moisture remains small.

In autumn, in October and November, the amount of precipitation decreases again to 1-2 mm, and the number of rainy days reduces to 6-9. Overall, Al Baha does not have a pronounced rainy season with heavy downpours. Precipitation, when it happens, most often presents as light drizzle or short-term rains. Snow is unlikely given the climatic conditions and temperature indicators.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Al Baha, it is worth considering that the climate here is generally warm, but with noticeable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. For visits during the cooler months, approximately from November to March, when the average daytime temperature is 17-21°C and can drop to 12-16°C at night, it is recommended to bring a light jacket, fleece, or sweater. Long trousers and closed shoes will also be appropriate. The principle of layering in clothing will help you easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day.

During the hot period, which lasts approximately from May to September, the daytime air temperature regularly rises above 30°C, sometimes reaching 33-34°C. At this time, preference should be given to very light, loose, and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Essential companions will be a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and cream with a high UV protection factor. Although rainfall in Al Baha is low year-round (0-4 mm per month), the number of days with possible short-term rains increases between April and June, as well as in August and September. Therefore, a light folding umbrella or a compact raincoat may prove useful.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, especially if you plan to explore the surroundings. Also, considering the cultural traditions of Saudi Arabia, it is recommended to choose modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for both men and women when visiting public places.
