Farther Afield and Where It’s Great: Let’s Fly to Africa

S
Sasha

Of course, flying to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in Tunisia or relaxing in Egypt, drifting on the surface of the saltiest sea, the Red Sea, is always super.

However, let’s not limit ourselves to the most popular destinations, most of which are offered by Ethiopian Airlines. We figured out where else the most avid travelers go in Africa. And, to be honest, we were amazed at how many cool options there are on this continent. So, let’s fly!

South Africa: to museums and to the not-so-southernmost point of the continent

For those who want to start from the end — or rather, from the very south of Africa, we recommend flying to South Africa. Cape Town is the capital of the country, so we assume you’ll want to start your acquaintance with the country from here.

The city’s name speaks for itself and translates as “Cape Town”. The main reason to visit here is a trip to the Cape of Good Hope, where penguins and seals roam freely.

Cape Town

We advise allocating more time for your trip to Cape Town: you will definitely need to enjoy all the natural attractions and stop by Hout Bay to try the best seafood.

Johannesburg is a Mecca for museums. Tourists usually begin their acquaintance with the city at the Origins Centre, which displays numerous archaeological and historical artifacts. They tell the story of how humans appeared in Southern Africa. If you want to learn even more about the region’s history, visit Constitution Hill, a place that once housed a prison and is now the country’s highest court.

Evening city

When planning your trip to Johannesburg, we recommend researching tours in your native language to visit the places you desire and not worry about misunderstanding anything.

Fortunately, Johannesburg offers plenty of this, and you can safely and comfortably enjoy both the cultural side and the local nature.

Galloping through the islands: Nosy Be or Seychelles?

If you’ve definitely heard of the Seychelles but have never vacationed on the equator, you need to urgently book a trip to the Seychelles, and just have a great rest. The tourist season ends in April, and after that, the rainy season begins. So if you’ve wanted to go for a long time and it never worked out, now is the time.

Azure sea and rocky beach

Why are the Seychelles amazing? Because while you bask on the sand, the lapping of the Indian Ocean’s turquoise waters soothes your ears. When you get tired of that, you can go on a helicopter tour, taste local cuisine made from fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood, try your hand at diving, or take photos with giant tortoises. Simple and chill!

Fans of active recreation definitely need to visit Madagascar at least once. We are sure that the animated film of the same name has formed at least some impression of this island: lemurs live there, baobabs grow, and the nature is truly picturesque.

Besides the main island part, we would advise flying to the island of Nosy Be, located off the northern coast of Madagascar. Tourists travel to Nosy Be to fully relax. Everything here is well-equipped for a comfortable holiday: hotels, many tour companies, an abundance of city excursions.

Here’s a must-do list for Nosy Be:

  • feed animals at Lemurland;
  • go underwater near Nosy Komba island to see local fish;
  • visit Lokobe National Park, home to endemic animals you won’t find anywhere else;
  • buy souvenirs at Anduani Market.

Time to East Africa: onward to the East

Where should you start your East Africa trip? We bet on Tanzania! There you’ll find 15 national parks, long walks on Zanzibar island, and, of course, Kilimanjaro — Africa’s highest stratovolcano. You can get here by flying into Kilimanjaro: the airport is located near the national park of the same name and other cool attractions.

Kilimanjaro

The most popular places among tourists (and we recommend visiting them too) are Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Kizimkazi Beach.

An equally great option for a trip to Africa is Kenya. The country is Tanzania’s closest neighbor, so you can kill two birds with one stone. Moreover, the capital, the city of Nairobi, is considered the largest city in East Africa.

Flock of pink flamingos in the lake

People come here for great safaris, photos with flamingos at Lake Nakuru, authentic food, and even for shopping if you want to buy colorful jewelry, clothes, and coffee.

In short, we wish you a fantastic trip to Africa!
