What to see in Abu Dhabi
When it comes to a trip to the United Arab Emirates, you probably think of Dubai. Thanks to all the IT specialists and bloggers on social media for popularizing this city.
However, there’s something else in the UAE that will surely surprise you. The capital, Abu Dhabi, is considered a place of luxury, a hub of skyscrapers and shopping. There are many beaches, water parks, and other delights here.
When to go
The best time to see all the sights of Abu Dhabi and fully enjoy the local shopping centers is considered to be from early October to late April. The heat subsides, and outdoor walks no longer cause discomfort. You can still swim, but from January, you’ll need to be hardy: the water will become cold, and instead of wanting to explore the sea, you’ll want to get out of it as quickly as possible.
How to get there
In fact, for many travelers, the entry rules for the UAE are quite straightforward. Depending on your citizenship, you may not even need a visa in advance, allowing you to enjoy your cherished vacation hassle-free.
And to make your experience even brighter, here’s a secret. Tickets to Abu Dhabi can often be found without layovers. It’s great when you don’t have to search for the right terminal for several hours or wonder what to do during a transfer. So, while there’s an opportunity, grab it and book your tickets. A fairy tale, no less!

Of course, shopping and a gastronomic tour are great. But there are many more options for what to see in Abu Dhabi.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
No European visa is needed to see this Louvre. It is located on Saadiyat Island and is a complex of buildings under a metal dome. Sunlight passes through the structure, creating unique patterns. It looks spectacular, especially considering that the entire building is surrounded by water.
So… what about the exhibits? One of da Vinci’s paintings is present, and works by Van Gogh and Gauguin are displayed. The thematic exhibition hall features antiquities from China, India, and Congo. By the way, the Louvre Abu Dhabi also has a hall with interactive exhibitions. In short, don’t miss it!
Ferrari World
The enormous entertainment complex “Ferrari World” will awaken your inner child. If you’ve dreamed since childhood of riding a high-speed roller coaster or feeling like a real racer — here you go! There’s entertainment for every taste. However, it’s worth planning a full day for your visit: you’ll be so drawn into the atmosphere of fun that you won’t want to leave.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Probably the largest mosque in all the Emirates, named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Its size is truly impressive: over 80 domes, a huge mosaic-covered square, 1,048 columns inlaid with gemstones… In short, it’s definitely something you must see.
If you want to learn more about this place, guided tours in Arabic and English are held daily (except Fridays). Entry is free. Our advice: observe the dress code. Men should wear shirts and trousers, and women must have their legs covered (including ankles) and their heads covered.
Yas Waterworld Waterpark
Consider this a continuation of the fun after a day at “Ferrari World”. Yas Waterworld Waterpark is located not far from the shopping complex (you can see it from afar, no map needed) and is in no way inferior to it in terms of various activities. Here you’ll find rides, wave pools, and children’s areas. In short, everything you need to feel happy and have a great time.
Presidential Palace
Another major attraction in Abu Dhabi, impressive in its size. The Presidential Palace is also known as Qasr Al Watan or “Palace of the Nation”. Official receptions are held here, so be prepared for an abundance of gold, marble, and decorations.
By the way, if you plan your trip to the palace, we recommend staying for the Palace in Motion light show. It tells the story of Abu Dhabi. This show begins after sunset. A perfect end to the day, don’t you think?
Founder’s Memorial
What makes the Founder’s Memorial unique is its concept. Three-dimensional figures suspended on threads form a 3D portrait of Sheikh Zayed. By the way, the monument is dedicated to him — as the man who founded the Emirates. Although construction took a full six years, anyone can now see the attraction.
Closer to evening, the scene becomes much more interesting: “The Constellation” (as the structure is named) shimmers with various lights. Isn’t that beautiful? And if you want to learn more about its creation, 30-minute guided tours are available throughout the day.
Corniche Promenade
The Corniche Promenade is an excellent walking location. It stretches for eight kilometers along the Al Khubeirah district, offering everything for a good mood: cafes, restaurants, playgrounds, and a huge green park.
If you’ve been really missing the sea, there’s good news! Right opposite the promenade is a beach with sun loungers. So, if you’re in the mood, don’t miss the chance to bask in the sun.
The National Aquarium
What’s a trip to the Emirates without an aquarium? Luckily, one of the largest in the Middle East is located right in Abu Dhabi (and we highly recommend you visit it). Here you’ll find fish of all colors and sizes — from large sharks to clownfish. Fortunately, a thick layer of glass will separate you from the underwater world. Thanks to it, anyone can walk through a long corridor and get incredibly close to marine life for a moment.
Observation Deck at 300
Caution! Everyone who is afraid of heights, step away from your screens. As you understand, the number “300” in the name of the Observation Deck didn’t appear by chance. This is the height above sea level from which you are offered to view the city. Binoculars are placed near the windows. You won’t be able to peek at anyone, but it’s quite real to marvel at how high you are.
By the way, there’s a cafe here. Have you ever had breakfast on the top floors of a high-rise right in front of panoramic windows? No? It seems there’s a great chance to fix that.
Abu Dhabi Mall
Well, shopping lovers, this is your moment to shine. The shelves of the stores here are packed with luxury and famous brands you’ve been missing. Abu Dhabi Mall is simply enormous; getting lost will be as easy as leaving all your accumulated money here. On the other hand, isn’t getting lost in a huge shopping mall a dream?
In short, it’s a great option for what to do on the weekend to treat yourself to a couple of new things.
Where to eat
In Abu Dhabi, not only does everything look luxurious, but the food is also fittingly excellent. We’re sharing a few locations, but rest assured, there are many more great establishments here.
Salt & Caramel
A good place for breakfast. Light desserts to choose from and a cup of coffee will definitely energize you for a long day’s walk. Plus, the view here is simply stunning. Rest assured, you’ll definitely fall in love with this cafe.
Al Fanar
For local cuisine, definitely head here. Portions are large, and prices are affordable. By the way, chain restaurants can be found in major shopping complexes — Marina Mall and Yas Mall.
Al Shader
If you love fish — don’t pass by. It’s served here in large quantities. In short, it’s an ideal option for a hearty lunch to recharge your energy.
Tazal Restaurant & Cafe
Come here for the atmosphere: modern style, outdoor terrace, and large portions. Just imagine how great it would be to spend an evening here!
Güngör Chef Restaurant
A restaurant with lots and lots of meat and neon lights.
Where to stay
Abu Dhabi is full of great hotels. However, for a family vacation near the beach, it’s best to choose Yas and Saadiyat islands. If your goal is to visit as many attractions and excursions as possible, then look for options in the Corniche Promenade area.

- Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre Hotel 3*. Pros: 15-minute drive from the airport, swimming pool, delicious food, and everything you need nearby. No apparent cons;
- Yas Island Rotana 4*. A very beautiful place with panoramic views and modern interiors. Rooms are spacious, and the beach is nearby. All this at a very reasonable price;
- Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri 5*. The hotel is located on the coast and embodies the word “comfort”. It will be more expensive, but you’ll spend your vacation 100%.
How to get around
Even if you decide to explore Abu Dhabi on your own, sooner or later you’ll be puzzled by the question, “How do I get around?” Agreed, it’s easy to get lost in an unfamiliar country without knowing the language. So, to avoid any unforeseen circumstances, let’s tell you about transportation in the UAE.
Generally, due to high temperatures, people often travel by bus here. To pay, you’ll need a Hafilat Card, which can be purchased at any vending machine near a bus stop.
Another option is a taxi. It’s relatively inexpensive here. To order a car, you’ll need the local Careem app.
There’s also an option with bicycles; you can rent them through an app. Most often, the name is written on the vehicle itself.
What to bring from Abu Dhabi
Well, souvenirs are a given. Many people want to delight their loved ones or put a piece of memory on the fridge, if not everyone. And where in Abu Dhabi you can find the most delicious gifts or unusual jewelry, we’ll tell you right now:
- essential oils, incense, and perfumes. Firstly, they are much cheaper in the UAE. Secondly, all of this is sold in almost all major shopping centers in Abu Dhabi. Here you’ll find oud oil perfumes, one of the popular incenses called bakhoor, or attars (essential oils from plants and flowers);
- cosmetics. It is also sold in large shopping centers and is made from eco-friendly ingredients;
- jewelry. In the Emirates, there is a huge selection of gold and silver jewelry. Most of it is sold in Madinat Zayed;
- Dates. The most common delicacy among all existing in the UAE. We recommend buying them at Al Mina market: there’s a large selection of different varieties and pleasant prices. Besides, you can buy coffee, spices, and syrup (here it’s called honey) there;
- chocolate. Also sold in souvenir shops and most often made from camel milk.
Tips
- Don’t get a local SIM card just for internet. Why pay more when some things can be obtained for free? For example, everyone entering Abu Dhabi from Dubai receives a SIM card with 1 GB of internet at passport control. Nice? Very. - Plan your visits to popular attractions on weekdays. There are many tourists and queues on weekends.
- Be aware: video calls on Telegram, WhatsApp, and Viber will be blocked in the UAE, and VPN usage is prohibited.
- Bring some warm clothing with you if you plan to go to a cafe or restaurant. Air conditioners operate in large quantities here, so it can sometimes get chilly.
- Keep your boarding pass if you’re flying Etihad Airways. It can give you a discount at hotels, and discounts always lift your spirits.
