Full Kit: What a Snowboarder or Skier Needs
As the saying goes, "winter is coming." It's high time to plan a mountain vacation. The feeling of speed, fresh frosty air, and breathtaking landscapes – for this, millions of people annually head to ski resorts. But for skiing and snowboarding to bring only joy, and not frostbitten fingers or bruises, it's important to take care of the right equipment.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, this guide will help you assemble a complete set of gear. We'll break everything down point by point so you know how to prepare for the season, where to ski, where to snowboard, and what to bring with you to be fully equipped.

The Main Question: Rent or Buy?
Before diving into the equipment list, it's worth deciding: buy everything at once or rent?
- Rental: an excellent option for beginners who are not yet sure if this is "their" sport. It allows you to try different models and brands without investing a lot of money. You can rent equipment at any ski resort both in Russia and abroad. Downside: the equipment may not be in ideal condition, and may not always fit in size or type.
- Purchase: if you plan to ride regularly, buying equipment will quickly pay off. This will give you comfort, safety, and confidence in every descent, as everything is selected individually for you.

Snowboarder's Equipment
The "holy trinity" for any snowboarder:
- Snowboard: chosen by height (usually the board should be roughly chin-high), weight, and riding style (freestyle, freeride, carving, all-mountain). For beginners, it's better to choose an all-mountain board of medium stiffness.
- Bindings: selected to match your boots and board. It's important that they fit snugly, providing secure fixation and power transfer to the edge.
- Boots: the most important element for comfort. They should fit very snugly but not pinch or rub. When buying, try them on with thick socks. Boot stiffness also depends on the riding style.
Clothing
Proper clothing is the key to warmth and dryness. We apply the three-layer principle:
- First layer (thermal underwear): wicks moisture away from the body. Should be made of synthetics or merino wool. Avoid cotton!
- Second layer (insulating): fleece or a thin down jacket. Retains warmth.
- Third layer (membrane jacket and pants): protects from wind, snow, and moisture, while still being breathable. Pay attention to waterproof (mm) and breathability (g/m²/24h) ratings.
Protection
Even experienced riders use protection.
- Helmet: mandatory! Protects the head from impacts. Try it on with a balaclava.
- Goggles (mask): protects eyes from UV rays, wind, and snow. It's advisable to have two lenses: a light one for cloudy weather and a dark one for sunny weather.
- Tailbone and hip protection: shorts with soft inserts. Very useful for beginners and when riding on hard slopes.
- Back protection: a "turtle" or protection integrated into a vest.
- Wrist protection: gloves or special pads that secure the wrist.
Accessories
- Gloves/Mittens: warm and waterproof. Mittens are usually warmer.
- Socks: special ski or snowboard socks, high, good at wicking moisture.
- Buff/Balaclava: will protect your face and neck from wind and frost.
- Backpack: small, for water, snacks, first aid kit.

Skier's Equipment
Many elements are similar to snowboarders, but there are also differences.
- Skis: chosen by height (usually up to the nose or slightly higher for beginners), weight, and riding style (carving, freeride, all-mountain).
- Bindings: mounted on skis and adjusted to your weight, skill level, and boot length. Only a professional should do this!
- Boots: as with snowboarders, comfort is paramount. They should fit snugly but not pinch. Stiffness is selected according to the riding level.
- Ski poles: pole height is chosen so that your forearm is parallel to the ground when gripping the pole.
Clothing
- Thermal underwear: synthetics or merino.
- Insulating layer: fleece, thin down jacket.
- Membrane jacket and pants: protection from the elements.
Protection
- Helmet: mandatory!
- Goggles (mask): eye protection.
- Back protection: a "turtle" or vest.
- Additionally: knee protection (for beginners) and elbow pads (for freestyle).
Accessories
- Gloves/Mittens: waterproof, warm.
- Socks: ski socks, high, moisture-wicking.
- Buff/Balaclava: for face and neck protection.
- Backpack: for essentials.

Where to Ski and Snowboard in Russia
Russia offers many wonderful places to ski and snowboard. Here are a few popular destinations:
- Krasnaya Polyana (Sochi): the most famous and developed resort in Russia. Three main skiing areas – Rosa Khutor, Gazprom, and Gorki Gorod. Here you'll find slopes for every taste, excellent infrastructure, and après-ski opportunities. Tickets to Sochi are available on many daily flights.

Preparing for a Trip to a Ski Resort
- Decide on the difficulty level of the slopes, infrastructure, snow availability, and your preferences (freeride, family vacation).
- Plan your flight in advance. Buying tickets to the chosen city near the resort will help you save money and choose a convenient flight.
- Booking accommodation is especially important during high season. From hotels to apartments – there are many options.
- Buy your ski pass online in advance; it's often cheaper that way.
- Be sure to get ski insurance that covers injuries.
- It wouldn't hurt to prepare for physical exertion, especially if you're going skiing after a long break.
Whichever ski resort you choose, be it Krasnaya Polyana or Dombay, remember: quality equipment is the key not only to your comfort but also to your safety. A properly selected snowboard, wherever you ride, and a complete set of clothing will allow you to fully enjoy the magic of the winter mountains. Get ready for adventures and see you on the slopes!
