How to return a ticket if you missed your train
Skip the anger, bargaining, and depression, and move straight to accepting the simple fact: you missed your train. But there's good news: not all is lost! Some of the money can still be refunded (to buy a new ticket). We'll tell you in which cases this is possible.

General points
Russian Railways (RZD) has two ticket categories – refundable and non-refundable. From the names, it's clear that tickets under the first fare can be returned, while those under the second cannot. Does this mean you can't get anything back with a non-refundable fare? There are nuances.
RZD rules state that a ticket purchased under a refundable fare can be returned within 12 hours after departure. In this case, only the fare is refunded, excluding the cost of the reserved seat (platzkart) and other fees.
But what if you chose a non-refundable fare? In this case, a refund is still possible(!), but only if you missed the train for a valid reason. It's like school: illness or an accident. You will need to write an application and attach supporting documents – a sick leave certificate, a doctor's note, a traffic police certificate, and so on. Here, the submission period is extended – up to 5 days from the train's departure.
How to return a ticket after missing a train
Missed it? You can only process a refund at the ticket office now; it won't work online. If you were still heading towards the station at that moment, continue your journey and prepare the documents:
- passport (and birth certificate for children);
- ticket or boarding pass. If you haven't printed it, just tell the cashier the 14-character electronic ticket number.
You can go to any ticket office at the station from which you were supposed to depart. Sometimes, stations have separate refund counters; if so, go there. The cashier will issue you a receipt and indicate the final amount you will be refunded, minus a 3.2 ruble fee for each seat.
The optimal refund period is from 20 minutes to three hours from the train's departure. If you meet these deadlines, the money will simply be transferred to the card you used for the purchase, or you will be given cash.
How to process a claim-based refund
This method works in several cases:
- more than three hours have passed since the train's departure;
- there are no ticket offices at the departure station where you could apply, and you have to process the refund elsewhere;
- the refund for an e-ticket is processed not by the passenger themselves, but by a third party. In this case, the '20 minutes to three hours' timeframe also does not apply;
- you want to return a ticket purchased under a non-refundable fare and have valid reasons for it: injury, illness, train departure was delayed or canceled, you were not provided with the seat indicated in the travel document.
First, you still need to go to the ticket office and get a form. Fill it out and submit it along with the specified documents. The processing time here is longer – up to 30 days. If the carrier makes a positive decision, the money will be transferred within another 30 days.
How to return tickets for international trains
Much depends on the specific country you are traveling to. Destinations are conditionally divided into near and far abroad. The near abroad includes CIS countries, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Abkhazia. If you cancel your trip more than 24 hours before the train's departure, you will be refunded the cost of both the ticket and the reserved seat. If there are 24 to 6 hours left, only the ticket cost and 50% of the reserved seat cost are refunded. Less than 6 hours – only the ticket amount. RZD remains silent on any refund if you miss such a train. However, money for service amenities (e.g., bed linen) is fully refunded, although a service fee is withheld.

Which tickets cannot be returned
Nevertheless, there are a couple of cases where you won't be able to get your money back at all. This applies to suburban trains (electric trains) and trains traveling to the far abroad.
8 hours before the departure of a fast suburban train, you will get the full cost back. Less than 8, but more than 2 hours left? You are entitled to 50%. Only 2 hours until the electric train? Nothing will be refunded.
If you change your mind about traveling, and there are less than 6 hours left until the international train's departure, you can stop rushing and worrying: no refund will be issued. Did you have to cancel plans earlier and there are more than 6 hours until the train? You will be refunded everything paid, but with a refund fee withheld.
When will the money be refunded
Payment system rules apply here, so the timeframe is from 7 to 30 calendar days from the date of refund processing. If a month has passed and there's still no notification, you'll have to contact your bank with a written claim, where you'll need to provide the ARN (unique transaction identifier).
