Broel Towers

About

Imagine two majestic medieval towers standing on either side of an ancient bridge over the waters of the Lys River. These are the famous Broel Towers — an architectural signature of Kortrijk. Located in the heart of Belgium, this pair of fortifications is a rare example of preserved medieval military architecture in the region.

Built from characteristic light sandstone, the towers feature a squat and powerful silhouette with conical roofs. The South and North towers (Speytoren and Ingelborghtoren) were once part of a complex system of city fortifications. Today, they form a picturesque ensemble with the Broelbrug bridge, creating one of the most recognizable and romantic panoramas in West Flanders.

The site got its unusual name from the "Broel" area — a marshy plot near the river where large-scale construction began in the 14th century. Today, this place attracts travelers not only for its historical significance but also for its special atmosphere of tranquility, perfect for a thoughtful introduction to the city's past.

What to Do

A walk around the Broel Towers is a must-do for every visitor to the city. Start by crossing the Broelbrug bridge, at the center of which stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges. This spot offers the best angles for photos, especially during the "golden hour" before sunset when the ancient stones are bathed in warm hues.

Be sure to peek inside the North tower (Ingelborghtoren), which houses a small museum. Here you can explore an exhibition dedicated to the city's defense history and see what the fortifications looked like centuries ago. It's a great opportunity to look inside the massive walls and feel the scale of medieval engineering.

After exploring the architecture, we recommend a stroll along the landscaped banks of the Lys (Leie) River. There are comfortable walking paths and rest areas where locals and tourists enjoy watching the passing boats. In the warmer months, the area around the towers becomes a hub of city life with small street events and tour groups.

Getting There

Finding this architectural monument is easy, as it is located in the heart of the historical center at Broelkaai. If you are already walking around the city, the towers are just a 5–10 minute leisurely walk from the main square, Grote Markt, following the signs to the river.

For those arriving from other cities, Kortrijk offers convenient rail connections. The central station is a 15–20 minute walk from the attraction. You can also use taxis or local buses that stop in the immediate vicinity of the embankment.

If you are traveling by car, there are parking zones along the Lys embankment. However, spaces may be limited on weekends, so many tourists prefer to leave their cars in park-and-ride lots and enjoy walking through the center's pedestrian areas.

History & Facts

The massive structures we see today are the only surviving fragments of the medieval defensive wall that once surrounded the entire city. The Broel Towers are silent witnesses to Flanders' military past. The South tower, known as Speytoren, was built in 1385 along with the bridge to control boat traffic on the Lys River.

Its northern neighbor, Ingelborghtoren, appeared a little later — in 1415. Despite their external similarity, it was built for a different purpose and served as an armory for a long time. Interestingly, until the 18th century, a watermill operated near the towers, using the river's current for the townspeople's needs.

It is noteworthy that the Broelbrug bridge connecting the towers was destroyed several times during historical upheavals, but the towers themselves have miraculously survived. Today, they are recognized as a cultural heritage site and are considered a benchmark of Flemish medieval light sandstone architecture.

Time Needed

To simply admire the majestic view of the medieval fortifications from the outside and take a few panoramic photos, 30–40 minutes will be enough. It's a popular stop on a walking route through the city center.

If you decide to go inside the North tower to visit the small museum and want to take a leisurely stroll along both banks of the Lys River, allow about 1.5–2 hours for your visit. This will let you examine the masonry details without rushing and enjoy the atmosphere of the old city over a cup of coffee at one of the riverside cafes.

Working Hours

Viewing the towers from the outside and walking across the bridge is available to tourists 24/7 and is completely free. However, access to the interiors is limited by the museum's opening hours. According to current data, the site is open to visitors in the afternoon:

  • Monday — Sunday: 13:00 – 18:00

Please note that during holidays or special city events, opening hours may vary slightly, so it is recommended to check the official tourism portal before your visit.
