Overview

St. Paul's Bay in Malta boasts a classic Mediterranean climate. This means you can expect long, hot, and very sunny summers, as well as mild, moderately humid winters. Extreme weather conditions are rare here, making it a comfortable destination to visit year-round, though the style of your holiday will depend on the season.

Two main seasons are clearly defined. Summer, lasting roughly from June to September, is characterized by high temperatures (average temperatures in July and August exceed 26-27°C) and a near-total absence of rainfall – in July, for example, there is no rain at all. Winter, from December to February, remains mild, with average temperatures around 14-16°C. It is during the winter months and late autumn (October-November) that the majority of precipitation occurs, though the total amount remains small. November and December are the months with the highest number of rainy days.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (October) are pleasant transitional periods with comfortably warm weather and minimal rain, especially in the spring. A notable feature of the St. Paul's Bay climate is the very low total annual rainfall, which guarantees plenty of sunny days, particularly during the summer period.

Temperature

St. Paul's Bay has a pronounced Mediterranean climate with distinct seasonal temperature fluctuations. The annual temperature regime is comfortable for visiting at almost any time. August is traditionally the hottest month, with an average air temperature of around 27.1°C and daytime highs reaching 28.4°C. The coolest month is February, with an average temperature of 14.0°C and nighttime lows around 12.9°C.

The summer period in St. Paul's Bay, spanning June, July, and August, is characterized by consistently hot and dry weather. Average temperatures during these months range from 23.1°C in June to a peak of 27.1°C in August. Daytime highs can regularly exceed 27-28°C, especially in July and August. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is small, usually within 2-3°C, which ensures warm evenings and nights, perfect for strolls by the sea.

Winter in St. Paul's Bay is mild, with no frost. From December to February, average temperatures remain in the range of 14.0°C to 16.0°C. Nighttime lows in the coldest month, February, drop to an average of 12.9°C, while daytime highs are around 15.1°C. As in summer, daily temperature fluctuations in winter are insignificant, rarely exceeding 2-3 degrees. This creates a feeling of consistently cool but not freezing weather.

Precipitation

St. Paul's Bay experiences a distinct seasonality in its precipitation patterns throughout the year. The climate is characterized by dry, warm summers and wetter but mild winters. Overall, the total annual rainfall is low, which is typical for the Mediterranean region.

A clear dry season occurs from April to August. During these months, rain is extremely rare. July is the absolute driest month, with an average of zero millimeters of precipitation and no recorded rainy days. April, May, June, and August are also virtually rain-free (0 mm), with the number of rainy days ranging from zero to three. This is the ideal time for those who prefer sunny weather without any rain.

The season with more frequent rainfall begins in September and lasts until March. The highest amount of precipitation, though still very moderate, falls in October and November – averaging 3 mm each. At the same time, November stands out as the month with the highest number of rainy days (around 12). Rain is also possible in December and January, averaging 10 and 9 days respectively, but the volume of precipitation remains small (2 mm and 1 mm). Precipitation usually falls as rain; snow is uncharacteristic for St. Paul's Bay due to the mild winter temperatures.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to St. Paul's Bay, it is important to consider Malta's Mediterranean climate to ensure your holiday is as comfortable as possible. During the summer months from June to August, when average temperatures reach 23-27°C and there is almost no rain, your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable clothing: cotton T-shirts, shorts, and sundresses. Don't forget swimwear, sunglasses, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen – the sun here is very strong. Comfortable sandals or flip-flops for the beach and light closed-toe shoes for city walks will be very useful. Even on a warm evening, a light sweater or pashmina might come in handy.

In spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), the weather in St. Paul's Bay is also very pleasant but more variable. Average temperatures range from 16°C to 25°C. During these periods, it's best to opt for layered clothing: T-shirts, long-sleeve tops, a light sweater or fleece, as well as a windbreaker or light jacket, especially for cooler evenings or the rare rains in October. In winter (November to March), temperatures hover around 14-16°C. This is the wettest season, particularly November and December, when the number of rainy days increases. Therefore, be sure to pack a waterproof and windproof jacket, warm sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, and comfortable, preferably waterproof, closed-toe shoes. A compact umbrella will also be useful. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are your main ally for exploring the beauty of Malta.
