Opened in 2017 by talented volcanologist Sergey Samoylenko and his wife Alena, the museum quickly became one of the region's main hallmarks. It is not just a classic exhibition with artifacts under glass, but a living space where knowledge about our planet is popularized through personal experience and interaction. Vulkanarium combines museum halls, a modern cinema, a lecture hall, and even a cozy cafe with local Kamchatka flair.

The main feature of the complex is its interactivity. Visitors are not only allowed but strongly encouraged to touch samples of rare rocks and pieces of solidified lava brought back from recent expeditions. The museum serves as an important driver for urban development and is a must-visit for those who want to truly understand the nature of the Far East.

What to Do

At Vulkanarium, you can expect a total immersion into the elements. One of the most impressive locations is the specially equipped lava cave. Thanks to video effects, surround sound, and even the specific smell of sulfur, it creates the illusion of being right next to a glowing stream of magma. You can see how lightning is born in an ash cloud and feel the power of natural processes.

The exhibition is divided into three thematic halls, each revealing different facets of Kamchatka's volcanism. Here, you can watch a working model of a tsunami or study the physics of a lava flow through a visual installation involving a candle. For those who love striking photos, there is a special selfie zone where you can take a picture against the backdrop of an erupting giant without putting yourself in danger.

In addition to exploring the displays, visitors are invited to participate in interesting workshops and listen to lectures about the origin of life on Earth. The museum also features a VR cinema that will transport you to the summits of the famous local peaks. After such an excursion, the Kamchatka landscapes you see during your travels across the peninsula will take on a completely new, profound meaning.

Getting There

The museum is located in the central part of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 34 Klyuchevskaya Street. Thanks to its convenient location, it is easy to reach by private car or public transport.

If you are just planning your journey to the peninsula, remember that the main hub is Valery Chkalov International Airport. Regular buses and shuttle taxis run from there to the city center. You can also use official taxi services, which will take you directly to the doors of Vulkanarium in 40–60 minutes.

For those already in the city, the central squares serve as a landmark. From there, you can take any bus passing through the "KP" (Komsomolskaya Square) stop or directly along Klyuchevskaya Street. A walk from the center is also possible and will allow you to enjoy views of the local "home" volcanoes.

History & Facts

The history of Vulkanarium is an inspiring example of how a passion for science and one's homeland can transform into a unique project. The museum was created solely through the efforts of local enthusiasts. The masterminds behind it were volcanologist Sergey Samoylenko and his wife, cultural expert Alena Samoylenko. Their goal was to showcase Kamchatka in a way that would impress even the most seasoned travelers.

The journey to the opening was not easy: the founders rented an abandoned building of a former kindergarten, which at the time didn't even have heating. It took months of immense effort to turn these rooms into modern exhibition halls. Many of the volcano models and display cases were handmade by a team of like-minded people who literally assembled the collection bit by bit.

The official opening took place on June 15, 2017. Since then, the museum has gained recognition not only from tourists but also from the city administration, becoming an important cultural center. Today, it is an honorary member of the Association of Private Museums of Russia and continues to evolve, introducing new technologies such as virtual reality and interactive installations.

Time Needed

To explore all three thematic halls without rushing and fully engage with the interactive exhibits, we recommend setting aside 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. This is sufficient time to view the main exhibition and participate in demonstrations of physical models.

If you plan to stop by the cozy museum cafe, watch a film in the VR cinema, or pick out authentic souvenirs in the shop, your visit could last half a day. The museum encourages thoughtful exploration, so take your time — every stone here has a story to tell.

Working Hours

The museum's doors are open to researchers and curious travelers every day. Vulkanarium is open seven days a week, making it easy to fit a visit into any travel schedule.

The operating hours from Monday to Sunday inclusive are from 10:00 to 20:00. Please note that the last tour usually begins one hour before closing to ensure guests have enough time to explore all the halls.
