General Weather Overview

The climate in Novi Sad can be characterised as moderate continental, with clearly defined seasons. The weather here is generally comfortable for travel: extreme cold or stifling heat rarely occur, making the city an attractive destination year-round. Humidity is distributed relatively evenly, although the number of rainy days varies slightly from season to season.

Summer in the city is warm, and sometimes hot, especially in July and August, when daytime temperatures often reach 30°C. This is the most popular time for tourists, although it is worth noting that the beginning of summer (June) can be quite rainy — with up to 13 days of precipitation. Spring and early autumn are ideal periods for long walks: in May and September, the air warms up to a pleasant 17-20°C, creating a mild and welcoming atmosphere.

Winter in Novi Sad is cool but usually not severe. The temperature in January fluctuates around zero or slightly above, although night frosts are possible. During this period, it is often cloudy and damp, with periodic precipitation in the form of rain or wet snow. Travellers planning a visit from December to February are recommended to bring warm waterproof clothing to comfortably enjoy the winter charm of the city.

Temperature

The temperature pattern in Novi Sad is characterised by distinct seasonality, allowing travellers to choose the ideal time for a trip depending on their preferences. The coldest month of the year is January, with an average temperature of about 2.5°C and night frosts down to -0.9°C. On the opposite end of the scale is August — the hottest month, when average daytime figures reach the 30.4°C mark, and the city fills with summer warmth.

Summer in this region of Serbia can be described as truly hot. In July and August, the air warms up to 30°C; however, oppressive heat is generally not observed thanks to comfortable night temperatures. In the evenings, the thermometer drops to a pleasant 18–19°C, creating excellent conditions for walks and open-air dinners after a sunny day.

Winters here are moderately cool and mild, without extreme frosts. During the day, the temperature often stays above freezing (about 5–7°C), but at night it can drop slightly below zero. It is worth considering daily temperature fluctuations: while in winter the difference between day and night is small, in the spring-summer period the variation becomes more noticeable, reaching 10–12 degrees, which brings welcome freshness.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Novi Sad is distributed quite unevenly throughout the year; however, there is no pronounced rainy or dry season here. The climate in this region of Serbia is moderate, so travellers should be prepared for changeable weather in any season. Precipitation falls most frequently in late spring and early summer: May and June lead in the number of rainy days, reaching an average of 13 days per month. During this period, rains often take the form of short but intense downpours, which are quickly replaced by sunshine.

For those who prefer drier weather, the best time to visit is early autumn. October is statistically the "driest" month of the year: the number of days with precipitation drops to a minimum (about 6 days). Also, a relatively small number of rainy days is observed in August and September (about 8 days), making this period comfortable for walking around the city and sightseeing outdoors.

In winter, the character of precipitation changes. In December and January, humidity rises, and precipitation falls quite often — about 11 days a month. Since the average temperature at this time fluctuates around zero and can drop to negative values (in January the minimum reaches -0.9°C), rain is often replaced by wet snow or snowfalls. Snow cover gives Novi Sad a special charm, although heavy snowstorms do not happen every year.

What to Pack

A trip to Novi Sad requires a thoughtful approach to your wardrobe, as all four seasons are clearly defined here. Regardless of the season, the main item on your list should be comfortable, worn-in shoes: walks on the cobblestones of the old centre and the climb to the Petrovaradin Fortress can be a test for your feet. Since the weather can be changeable, especially in the off-season, it is best to stick to the principle of layering to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.

Summer in the city can be quite hot, with daytime temperatures often reaching 30°C, so bring light clothing made of natural fabrics, sunglasses, and sunscreen. However, May and June are some of the wettest months (up to 13 rainy days), so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will not be amiss. Evenings by the Danube can bring freshness even in warm months, so a light cardigan or windbreaker will come in handy for night walks along the promenade.

In winter and late autumn, the temperature drops to 0°C and below, so be sure to take a warm jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves. Humidity and wind from the river can increase the feeling of cold, making thermal underwear an excellent addition to your luggage. In March and April, the weather is still unstable, so a mid-season jacket and waterproof shoes will ensure comfort during excursions, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the city under any conditions.
