Founding and Early Mentions
The history of Zephyrhills officially began on April 18, 1910, when the city was founded by Captain Harold B. Jeffries. Originally, the area was home to a small settlement called Abbott Station, which had existed since the 1880s.
Captain Jeffries purchased approximately 35,000 acres of land with an ambitious goal—to create a colony for veterans where they could enjoy a well-deserved retirement in a favorable climate.
Key Factors of Establishment
The city's development was determined by a successful combination of geographical features and clever marketing by its founders:
- Unique Name: The city's name was chosen specifically to attract residents. It combined the word "zephyr" (meaning a warm, gentle breeze) and "hills," highlighting the hilly terrain—rare for Florida—and the pleasant, cool air.
- Transport Artery: The existence of the Atlantic Coast Line railway station was a critical factor that provided logistics for trade and the arrival of new settlers.
- Natural Resources: The presence of pure water springs, for which the city is still famous today, played a vital role in its early growth.
Early Cultural and Economic Features
In its first decades, the economy of Zephyrhills relied on agriculture, particularly citrus farming, as well as turpentine production and logging. From the beginning, the city's cultural life formed around the community of veterans and retirees, establishing the traditions of hospitality and a relaxed pace of life that still characterize the city today.
