Children's Travel on Long-Distance Trains

Who can travel for free

On long-distance trains, children under 5 years old can travel for free, but only when accompanied by an adult. In this case, the child does not occupy a separate seat. Despite free travel, a ticket is still issued.

Under these conditions, one passenger can take only one child. If a child under 5 years old occupies a separate seat, a ticket is issued for them according to the fare.

In "Lux" class carriages, free travel is possible for one child under 5 years old and one child under 10 years old, regardless of the number of adults (except for carriages of the High-Speed Communication Directorate "DOSS").

The child's age is determined on the day of travel.

What documents are needed

Children under 10 years old cannot travel on long-distance trains without adult accompaniment. The exception is if the child travels by train for studies.

For children under 14 years old, it is necessary to present the original birth certificate or its notarized copy. If the child turned 14 two months ago, they can travel with both a birth certificate and a Russian Federation citizen's passport. Exception: trips to and from Kaliningrad Oblast with transit through Lithuania β€” in this case, the child will need a foreign passport.

Discounted travel for schoolchildren

When purchasing a ticket for a passenger aged 10 to 18, a 50% discount will be automatically applied to the "Full" fare when choosing a seat in a reserved seat, general, double-decker compartment, or motor-car train in 2nd and 3rd class seats, excluding high-speed trains. It is no longer necessary to select a separate fare or present a certificate upon boarding.

Children's Travel on Suburban Trains

Who can travel for free

Children under 7 years old can travel for free on suburban trains. They must be accompanied by adults. The child should not occupy a separate seat. A free travel ticket is issued for the child.

If the child still needs a separate seat, a ticket will be issued for them at the children's fare.

By the way, if the child turned 7 on the day of travel, they can still travel for free. The child's age is determined on the day of travel.
