How does an airport work from the inside?
We already have an article for those who feel anxious at the airport because they don’t know where to go or what to do there. In this text, we’ll shed light on other questions that are just as interesting, if you think about them. So, let’s think and explain.
Who serves passengers at the airport?
It’s not always representatives of the airline you’re flying with who are at check-in and boarding. Sometimes these are special hired agents responsible for passenger and ground handling. Their authority includes checking that you have identification documents and a boarding pass, that your luggage complies with the weight limit, and that your hand luggage is within the permissible size.
Agents also help people with disabilities and unaccompanied minors go through all pre-flight procedures and comfortably settle on the plane. If you specifically need an airline representative, look for the carrier’s information desk — a knowledgeable person will definitely be there.
Why is luggage weight checked?
It’s certainly not to extort more money from you for excess weight. The fact is that each aircraft has a permissible total baggage mass that can be loaded onto it, and this cannot be exceeded. Baggage load, just like the weather, affects flight safety.
Why is the flight delayed?
In short: many factors influence timely departure, from weather conditions to human error. Sometimes runways are so busy that a plane cannot land on time — there’s simply no space. It is forced to circle above the airport, waiting for landing clearance. Because of this, other flights cannot depart on time.
We have written in detail about other reasons and what to do in case of a flight delay here>>>
The plane has landed. What next?
As passengers, we want to disembark quickly. But why do we have to wait so long? The thing is, when a plane approaches the gate, it’s accompanied by a special vehicle. There’s also a special person who helps pilots park with specific hand signals (in some airports, a program does this).
After that, ground handling of the aircraft begins. While the plane is on the ground, it costs money, so servicing is done as quickly as possible. The baggage cart and air stairs are already ready. But sometimes you still have to wait.
There’s another reason for the long wait to exit: baggage unloading. If it happens on the same side where people are disembarking, the aircraft might tilt due to weight shift. Therefore, baggage is unloaded first, and then people are allowed off. But there’s a plus to this: by the time you reach the baggage carousel, your suitcase will already be waiting for you.
