To Tunisia for 4 days: with a certificate, but without quarantine

Tunisia has introduced entry rules for foreign tourists. These rules differ for those traveling independently and those traveling as part of a tour. Independent tourists are required to have a test and quarantine upon arrival, while those on a tour only need a certificate. But only if you are flying for a period of up to 5 days. In this article, we will tell you how to spend time in Tunisia productively even without the sea and beaches.

Why December?

December is a good time to visit Tunisia. During the day, the weather can be up to +14–16 degrees Celsius, and the sea has already cooled down, so you don’t have to spend time on it. Comfortable clothes and weather await you to get acquainted with the country not only from the perspective of a beach holiday.

Thalassotherapy

In general, the winter period is the time for thalassotherapy in Tunisia. Be sure to choose a hotel with this service — it’s the best relaxation after a flight with transfers. In general, spending a day in a thalasso center is a great way to thank your body.

Ancient Ruins

Carthage is the ruins of an ancient city on the shore of the Gulf of Tunis, and the Amphitheater is very similar to the Roman Colosseum. You can even wander through its underground corridors and climb to the stands. Those with a good imagination will envision gladiatorial fights in the arena.

White-Blue City

To visit the country and not see the city of Sidi Bou Said is a crime. This is a city in white and blue tones — yes, the very one from the advertising pictures — standing on a cliff on the Mediterranean coast. The city is located near Carthage, so visiting both places can be combined.

Sahara

What people partly go to Tunisia for is the Sahara Desert. There are places there where episodes of Star Wars were filmed. But we recommend going into the desert only with a guide; they will tell you interesting facts and ensure a safe journey. You can find excursions online or inquire at your hotel’s reception. But keep in mind that there are dozens of desert programs, and if you specifically want to visit filming locations, be sure to clarify the program in advance.

Cave City

Matmata — also a filming location for some Star Wars episodes. It’s a cave city with man-made chalk caves dug directly into the mountains.

Djerba Island

This popular island is located not far from the mainland. There are many amazing places here too. For example, the pottery village of Guellala. From local artisans at the bazaar, you can buy clay and ceramic products, and not just any — but beautiful and high-quality ones.

Another popular attraction, the El Ghriba synagogue, is also hidden on the island in the settlement of Er-Riadh.

You can get to the island in two ways, not counting by plane:

• by water on a ferry from the village of Jorf to the town of Ajim;

• via the Roman causeway that connects the island to the mainland.

Transport in Tunisia

Within cities, there is a well-developed network of tram and bus routes, as well as taxis. High-speed trains run between cities. Tickets can be purchased at the station or online on the website.

The metro runs from the center of Tunis to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, and La Marsa. Trains depart every 8–10 minutes, and the ticket price is 1.50 Tunisian dinars.

You will also notice 8-seater minibuses in the city. Minibuses with yellow and blue stripes operate within the city, while those with a red stripe are intercity.

What cannot be exported from Tunisia?

Local currency. If you have dinars left, exchange them at the airport. The exchange rate, of course, is unfavorable, but at least you won’t pay a fine for exporting local money.
