Where to go to the sea in autumn
It would seem that whoever didn't manage to swim in the sea in summer will wait until next season. Not so fast! We researched this question and found several options for where to go to the sea in autumn. So, let's not unpack our swim trunks and head off on a coastal trip!
Egypt
For many, Egypt remained a memory from the 2000s with photos against the backdrop of pyramids and disgruntled camels. In half of the cases, this is true, but besides that, in this country, you can find a ton of entertainment for active holiday lovers.
Let's start with the fact that Egypt is far from just the clichéd pyramids. People often come here to admire the architecture of buildings with open canopy-galleries and flat terrace-roofs. Active holiday enthusiasts choose Egypt as a great place with spots for underwater diving. The two main coastal cities are Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. We will talk about them.
When choosing between Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, base your decision on your preferences. Hurghada offers tranquility and “all-inclusive,” while Sharm El Sheikh is for more active holidays with Red Sea diving. So, Egypt is a super option for where to go abroad to the sea in autumn.
The velvet season begins in the second half of September and lasts until the end of November. During this time, the sun is not as scorching, and you don't have to fear getting sunstroke. The average air temperature during this period is +25…+30 degrees Celsius. The sea remains warm: in October +29…+31, in November +24…+27.
Tickets and tours become cheaper closer to mid-autumn. In October, you can already notice much more attractive prices on hotel websites.
Another option:book airline tickets well in advance if you are sure about your vacation dates. Flying directly to Hurghada takes about seven hours (but it will be cheaper with a layover in Antalya or Istanbul), the same applies to flights to Sharm El Sheikh.
Turkey
Of course, you can't have an article about the sea without Turkey. Let's grab airline tickets Moscow — Antalya and indulge ourselves! It is here that the Mediterranean Sea is considered one of the cleanest, and the number of great beaches is off the charts. The flight takes only five hours, which is also a plus.
Prices start to decrease closer to mid-September. On tour and airline ticket websites, you can notice a drop of approximately 20-30% from seasonal prices. At the same time, all tourist spots are open and fully operational, and there are far fewer tourists in the country than in summer.
One of the coastal cities rarely mentioned is Bodrum. This city is considered the most bohemian and party-oriented place in all of Turkey, located on the Aegean Sea. It's warm here until the end of October, and the sea cools down slowly. Despite this, it's better to bring some extra clothing for the evenings, as it gets cool.
Bodrum offers exciting nightlife, 67 beaches with perfectly clear water and a confirming blue flag award, as well as the absence of such crowds of tourists as in Alanya and Antalya. In short, choose according to your taste and preference. And if it's still unclear where to go to the sea in autumn 2025, we'll tell you about other destinations below.
The velvet season begins from early/mid-September and lasts until mid-November. During this time, the air temperature is +25…+28 degrees Celsius, and the water temperature in October is +26…+27 degrees. It should be understood that in November, the sea cools down to +20 degrees, and such a temperature may not be entirely suitable for heat-loving creatures.
Thailand
You can go to Thailand any time of the year; you just need to choose the right city. Don't rush to buy airline tickets Moscow — Phuket. The weather in Phuket is so unpredictable that you might arrive during the peak rainy season. Pattaya, in this sense, is a much more pleasant option.
On the other hand, prices drop significantly in September. Therefore, when choosing where to fly in autumn, people often opt for Thailand. Fruits and tourist attractions are also widely available during the rainy season. In Pattaya, you can choose to stay in a secluded beachfront hotel or right in the heart of the city's club nightlife. Unlike Phuket, prices here are initially somewhat lower and more pleasant.
In autumn, the temperature in Phuket stays within +30…+32 degrees Celsius, and the warm sea heats up to 29 degrees. Sounds good, but high humidity (up to 85%) can spoil everything. It rains 10 to 16 days a month in autumn, and strong winds make the water murky and raise high waves. We do not recommend traveling with children at this time; the sea is not super safe.
Tourists already familiar with Phuket's weather manage to catch several hours of sun on the beaches daily between rains. The ground dries quickly and allows for at least a little lounging on the beach. Pattaya is a different story — there is much less precipitation here, but it is still warm.
If Phuket still remains a dream destination, we recommend going in November. At this time, the rainy season subsides, and the temperature stays around +30 degrees Celsius.
Tunisia
Ah, in Africa, the rivers are this wide, and in Tunisia, there are rivers, and the sea, and everything else. Located in the far north of Africa, Tunisia attracts more and more tourists and reveals itself from new perspectives. For example, as a country with magnificent beach holidays in autumn, spring, and summer.
The main resorts of Tunisia are Monastir, Enfidha, Mahdia, and Djerba. The velvet season here begins in the second half of September. The average temperature in September is +30 degrees Celsius, in October +26, and in November +21. In Djerba, the temperature is 1-2 degrees higher, as it is the southernmost of the mentioned resorts.
The swimming season lasts until the end of October, when the water maintains a temperature of around +25 degrees Celsius. But we all know that Russians are not afraid of even the coldest water. Moreover, during the velvet season, the Mediterranean Sea becomes cleaner, and there are fewer tourists on the beaches. Therefore, Tunisia is an ideal place for a seaside holiday in autumn.
The cheapest holiday will be in November, and the fastest way to fly to Djerba is a direct one-way flight that takes only 15 hours. A route with three transfers will take a day, but it will save about 20 thousand rubles.
Abkhazia
One of the options for where to go to the sea without a visa is Abkhazia. The high season here ends in August, and September-October is a good time for a budget holiday.
The choice of resorts in Abkhazia is vast: from the well-known Gagra to the small Pitsunda. Sandy-pebble beaches will delight you in any coastal city, and accommodation options for every taste and budget can also be found everywhere. Among the differences, the following should be highlighted:
- Gagra is rightfully considered the most luxurious resort in Abkhazia. It is here that you can find the best five-star hotels. But inexpensive private holiday homes for rent can also be found;
- Pitsunda is better suited for family holidays with children — a gentle sandy entry into the water makes the vacation more peaceful and safe;
- The capital of Abkhazia — Sukhumi — is more famous for its architectural antiquities than for beach holidays. Especially since the city's two main beaches — Central and Sinop — are pebble beaches.
The swimming season is still open at this time of year, with air temperatures of +26 degrees Celsius in September and +20 degrees in October. The sea cools down to +21 degrees in October, retaining its summer warmth. In the first two months of autumn, Abkhazia has plenty of fresh fruits and significantly fewer tourists on the beaches. There is almost no precipitation. In November, it gets noticeably colder (+15 degrees), and the swimming season closes.
Russia
If there's absolutely no desire to leave the country, there are several options for where to go to the sea in Russia. We'll talk about the sea in the singular — the Black Sea. Of course, we'll cover the classic spots: Tuapse, Sochi, Gelendzhik, and Anapa. All four cities are located on the Black Sea coast and open their velvet season in September.
In Tuapse and Sochi, September is still warm enough for swimming in the sea: +25 degrees Celsius during the day allows for comfortable sunbathing. In Gelendzhik and Anapa, it's already cooler, with only +20 degrees in September. In October, the amount of precipitation increases, temperatures in Sochi and Tuapse drop to +20 degrees, and in Anapa and Gelendzhik, they fall to +14…+15.
The velvet season on the Black Sea coast is considered short. But it also pleases with reduced accommodation prices (in hotels and private rentals), a rich variety of fruits, and still-open tourist centers with excursions and sea entertainment.
For lovers of sandy beaches, Anapa is suitable; its golden quartz sand delights crowds of tourists annually. In other coastal cities, the beaches are a mix of sand and pebbles, and sometimes with an admixture of shell rock.
Flights to Sochi are available daily and are a super budget-friendly option for lovers of autumn seaside holidays. The flight takes only 4 hours. You can reach Anapa by train: the journey will take 1-2 days, but think of how many natural beauties you can see along the way!
Checklist for a seaside holiday in autumn (regardless of the country):
- take swim trunks, a first-aid kit, and yourself;
- don't forget sunscreen and a sun hat;
- also be sure to pack a jacket/cardigan for evening and night walks, and flip-flops for walking on pebbles on the beach;
- study the country's features and weather before departure to avoid unpleasant surprises (it would be good to learn a couple of basic words or phrases in the local language);
- book tickets on Kupi.com and accommodation in advance;
- also exchange at least ten thousand rubles into local currency in advance, so you don't frantically search for an exchange office upon arrival.
Didn't get to swim in the sea? No problem! Options can always be found even in autumn!
