Entry Rules for Georgia
Georgia is famous for its hospitality. It's easy for Russians to enter – all you need is a foreign passport, which allows you to stay in this beautiful country for a whole year. We tell you how to cross the border without problems and what important nuances you need to consider before your trip.

Is the Georgian border open?
Since 2023, Russia has opened direct air travel with Georgia — so now you can easily fly to Tbilisi on a direct flight. The land border also remains open — you can easily enter the country by car or bus through the "Kazbegi – Verkhny Lars" border crossing.
How to get there from Russia
By plane
Now you can quickly and comfortably get to Tbilisi directly on a direct flight. The flight will take about three hours. You can always buy cheap flights to Tbilisi on Kupi.com.
You can also get tickets on Kupi.com with a layover or stopover, for example, in Yerevan. This will be cheaper, and you can see two countries for the price of one.
By car/bus
The land border between Russia and Georgia is open, so you can easily get to Tbilisi via the checkpoint in North Ossetia by car or scheduled bus. Note that sometimes checkpoints are closed due to weather conditions: for example, if there is heavy snow. Up-to-date news on the situation at the checkpoint can be read in the Telegram chats "Georgia Border" and "Verkhny Lars".
Immediately after the Georgian checkpoint, there is a currency exchange point and a SIM card sales point (if it's critically important to quickly get local currency and communication). Georgia does not accept Mir cards; occasionally, purchases can be paid with UnionPay. So it's better to exchange cash in advance.
Please note that the road from the checkpoint to Tbilisi is a winding mountain road with sharp turns. If you are confident in your driving skills — go for it, but if you just want to get to your destination comfortably — it's better to take a scheduled bus with an experienced driver.
By the way, you can also get to Tbilisi from Armenia via the land border. This might significantly save you money. Compare prices and choose the route that suits you best.

What documents are required for entry
The only mandatory document required for entry into Georgia is a foreign passport. It must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Georgia. The maximum period of stay in the country is one year. However, you can do a "visa run": exit and re-enter the country, and then the period of stay will start counting again.
Children under 14 must be entered in your foreign passport; no other documents will be needed. Children over 14 will require their own foreign passport.
Let's be clear: crossing the Georgian border can be difficult, especially at the airport. You might even be denied entry into the country. Unfortunately, this happens, so it's best to prepare in advance and bring documents that border guards might request:
- hotel booking voucher;
- bank statement or other proof that you have sufficient funds for your stay in the country;
- return ticket.
You will also need medical insurance for your trip. It's not mandatory, but it will save you from unnecessary expenses in Georgian hospitals.
Important nuances
Georgia has very complex relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia: the country does not recognize the independence of these territories. Therefore, there is no legal way to enter Georgia from Abkhazia or South Ossetia.
Georgian border guards may deny you entry to Georgia if they find that you have crossed the border with Abkhazia. Some travelers have already encountered this. So keep this in mind if your foreign passport has a stamp indicating a visit to Abkhazia.
Physically, you can exit Georgia through Abkhazia and then get to Sochi. But this is unsafe, and you may encounter problems the next time you plan a trip to Georgia.

Georgia is a beautiful and hospitable country. But crossing its state border requires a responsible approach. Travel wisely with Kupi.com!
