Current Weather

Planning a trip to Malanje? In this section, you will find up-to-date climate information and detailed forecasts to help you prepare for your journey through Angola.

Overview

Malanje is located in a tropical wet climate zone, characterized by distinct seasonality. Travelers should note that the weather in this region of Angola is divided into two main periods: a wet rainy season and a cool dry season, known as cacimbo.

The rainy season lasts from August to May, bringing warm, humid, and often cloudy weather. In contrast, the period from May to August offers clear skies and a lack of precipitation. Thanks to its proximity to the equator, the temperature range in the city remains stable throughout the year, making it welcoming for tourists in almost any month.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Malanje is remarkably consistent. On average, the thermometer fluctuates between 20–25°C. The warmest months are March and April, when average daily highs reach 28°C. June and July bring relative coolness, especially at night when temperatures can drop to 15°C.

During the dry season, the daytime heat is more comfortable due to low humidity. In contrast, during the rainy season, even with moderate temperatures, high humidity can create a feeling of tropical heat. Diurnal temperature fluctuations are moderate, so nights in the city offer a pleasant freshness but rarely require heavy layers.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Malanje is distributed unevenly, creating a clear distinction between seasons. Most rain falls between August and May. The peak humidity occurs in November (over 210 mm of rainfall) and April, when it can rain for up to 20 days a month. This period is characterized by intense tropical downpours, which are usually followed by quick clearings.

Conversely, the dry period (from June to August) is characterized by an almost complete lack of rainfall. In June and July, records show minimal values—around 0.2 mm—guaranteeing tourists absolutely dry and clear skies. This is an ideal time for exploring natural attractions, as the risk of getting caught in the rain is practically non-existent.

Packing Tips

When visiting Malanje during the dry season, it's best to choose clothing made of natural breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget to pack sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat; on cloudless days, the sun can be very intense. For evening walks in June or July, a light sweater or windbreaker might come in handy.

If your visit coincides with the rainy season, be sure to pack a compact raincoat or a sturdy umbrella. In high humidity conditions, it's better to opt for quick-drying synthetics, which handle frequent rainfall more easily. Regardless of the season, for walks through the picturesque savannas around the city, you will need comfortable closed-toe shoes and an effective insect repellent.
