Founded back in 1886, the pub evolved from a humble iron structure into a magnificent two-story building designed by renowned architects. One of the brightest jewels of the interior is the famous Blonde Room with its massive two-meter chandelier—a hall that was historically used for grand receptions and has maintained its elegance to this day.

Following a large-scale renovation completed in 2020, the pub adopted a stylish loft design, acquired a cozy beer garden, and a modern outdoor bar. Today, this highly-rated establishment is famous for its welcoming atmosphere and quality cuisine, remaining a must-visit on any tourist's itinerary in New South Wales.

What to Do

A visit to this pub offers guests much more than just a classic menu. You can begin your experience with a walk through its historical halls to appreciate the Masonic architecture and the exquisite decor of the Blonde Room. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the spacious beer garden in the backyard is ideal, where you can enjoy cool drinks in the shade of umbrellas.

Foodies should check out the local bistro, which offers a wide selection of dishes—from traditional Australian classics to modern culinary innovations. The open loft atmosphere and stylish bar create the perfect setting to feel the pulse of life in Broken Hill. If you are traveling with a large group, the pub offers several functional event zones capable of accommodating hundreds of guests.

Don't forget to head up to the new balcony area, which offers views over the city's central streets. Thanks to the installed elevator, all levels of the building are accessible to all visitors, making The BHP one of the most convenient and modern historical establishments in the region.

Getting There

The establishment is located in the very heart of the city on the main street, Argent St. Thanks to its central position at the intersection of the Barrier Highway and the Silver City Highway, the pub is easy to find. For those traveling by car, parking spaces are available nearby.

If you are arriving from other parts of the country, the most convenient way is to fly into Broken Hill (BHQ) airport, from where a taxi ride to the center takes no more than 5 minutes. The city is also connected by regular rail services (the Indian Pacific train) and bus routes from Sydney and Adelaide, which arrive at the station within walking distance of the pub.

History & Facts

The story of this place began in 1886, when a modest structure of wood and corrugated iron, known as The Broken Hill Hotel, was erected on the site. However, just three years later, the Freemasons purchased the land and built a magnificent two-story brick building here. The construction cost at the time was a colossal £14,000, which is equivalent to approximately 2 million dollars today.

Over the decades, the pub has witnessed many iconic events. In 1912, due to a butchers' strike, guests were served rabbit dishes instead of the usual steaks, and in 1941, the famous 37-day "beer strike" took place here. In 1954, the building's facade was festively decorated to honor the visit of Queen Elizabeth II, highlighting the establishment's status as one of the most important in the city.

The modern chapter in the pub's life began in 2014 when new owners initiated a large-scale renovation. In 2020, the venue reopened its doors under the updated name The Broken Hill Pub, preserving its historical charm while adding modern comforts, including the installation of an elevator and expanded terraces.

Time Needed

To leisurely enjoy the atmosphere and cuisine of the pub, it is recommended to set aside 1 to 2 hours. This is sufficient time for a full meal and a tour of the historic building's interiors, including the famous halls on the second floor.

If you plan to visit in the evening, when entertainment events or live performances often take place, it is worth staying for 3 hours or more. The evening atmosphere in the beer garden is perfect for long conversations and relaxing with friends.
