Getting to the Airport

Getting to Fuzuli International Airport (FZL) from the city centre and surrounding areas is possible in several ways. The airport is located in close proximity to the city, so the journey will not take much time, typically around 15–25 minutes depending on the chosen transport and traffic conditions.

Public Transport is currently represented mainly by bus routes connecting the airport with key points in the city of Fuzuli. This is the most budget-friendly way to reach the terminal. It is recommended to check the schedule and exact routes on-site, as the transport network continues to develop. There is no railway or metro service to the airport.

Taxi and Private Transfer are the most convenient and fastest options. A car can be found at the designated stand outside the arrival terminal exit or ordered in advance via online services and hotels. A taxi ride ensures maximum comfort, especially if you are travelling with large luggage. The cost of the trip is moderate, but it is recommended to agree on the price with the driver before starting the journey to avoid misunderstandings. A pre-booked transfer guarantees a fixed price and a meeting with the driver at the airport.

For those who prefer to plan their movements independently, car rental is available. Rental points may be located both at the airport itself and in the city. It is recommended to book a car in advance, especially during the peak tourist season. The airport territory features parking, where you can leave your vehicle for both short and long periods.

Terminals and Map

International Airport Fuzuli (FZL) is a modern and compact aviation hub distinguished by a structure that is simple and clear for passengers. The airport operates one passenger terminal, which serves both domestic and international flights.

Thanks to its compactness, navigation through the terminal is intuitive. The airport layout consists of a single building where departure and arrival zones are clearly separated. This eliminates the need for transfers between terminals and makes moving around the airport as fast as possible. All signage is provided in multiple languages, which helps to orient oneself easily.

The departure zone is located on one level and includes check-in counters, passport and customs control points, as well as a security screening area. After completing all formalities, passengers enter a comfortable waiting lounge before boarding. The arrival zone is also located in the same building and is equipped with border control counters, a baggage claim belt, and an exit to the city.

One of the main advantages of the airport is the speed of completing all procedures. Flight check-in and screening usually take significantly less time compared to major aviation hubs. Nevertheless, it is recommended to arrive at the airport in advance — at least 2 hours before departure, to complete all formalities without rushing. For navigation, simply follow the standard signs for "Departures" and "Arrivals".

Airport History

The history of Fuzuli International Airport (IATA: FZL) is, above all, a story of the rapid creation of a modern infrastructure facility. Unlike airports with decades of history, it was built from scratch in record time and immediately became an important transport hub of regional significance.

Construction work began in January 2021 after extensive demining operations in the area. The erection of the terminal complex and all necessary infrastructure took just eight months, which is an outstanding achievement in the field of civil engineering. As early as 5 September 2021, the airport received its first test flight, and the grand opening ceremony took place on 26 October 2021.

Immediately after opening, the airport was granted international status, confirmed by the IATA code — FZL. It is equipped with a modern runway 3,000 metres long, capable of receiving even heavy transport aircraft and wide-body passenger liners. The capacity of the passenger terminal is 200 people per hour.

Today, the airport in the city of Fuzuli is a key element of the region's transport system. It is often referred to as the "Air Gateway of Karabakh", as it plays a crucial role in restoring economic ties, developing tourism, and ensuring convenient communication with other regions and countries.

Services and Amenities

Fuzuli International Airport (FZL) is a modern and compact air hub providing passengers with all necessary services for a comfortable wait for their flight. The terminal is designed taking into account international standards to ensure convenience for all categories of travellers.

While waiting for departure, passengers can visit a café serving drinks and light snacks, as well as browse shops, including a Duty Free zone. For the convenience of travellers, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, and charging stations for electronic devices are equipped in the waiting halls. For those who value enhanced comfort, there is a VIP Lounge with a more cosy atmosphere.

Currency exchange points and ATMs operate within the airport territory. In case of necessity, passengers can contact the medical point for first aid. For travellers with children, a Mother and Child Room is equipped, where one can care for little ones in a calm environment.

The airport is fully adapted to serve passengers with reduced mobility. A barrier-free environment has been created here, including ramps and specially equipped restrooms. Airport staff are ready to provide necessary assistance during boarding and disembarking from the aircraft.

Since the infrastructure in the airport area continues to develop actively, there are no hotels directly on its territory. Travellers are recommended to plan accommodation in advance in the nearest available settlements. Specialised business centres and conference halls are not provided within the terminal.

Dining

International Airport Fuzuli (FZL) is a new and modern transport hub, the infrastructure of which continues to develop actively. At the moment, the choice of catering establishments here may be limited, which is typical for small regional airports. Nevertheless, passengers can count on basic amenities to have a snack before departure.

In the main passenger terminal, you will likely find a small café or coffee shop. The main assortment usually includes ready-made snacks such as sandwiches, pastries, crisps, and chocolate, as well as hot and cold drinks — coffee, tea, juices, and sparkling water. This is a convenient option for a quick bite if you have little time before boarding your flight.

There may not be full-service restaurants with extensive menus and waiter service at the airport. However, at the café, there is a chance to try elements of the national cuisine of Azerbaijan, for example, traditional sweet pastries like pakhlava or savoury shor-gogal buns. Regarding special dietary needs (vegetarian, gluten-free, or specific halal meal sets), the choice is likely to be extremely limited. Passengers with strict dietary requirements are recommended to bring food with them.

Catering establishments are generally located in the "airside" zone, that is, after passing passport control and security screening. Prices for food and drinks at the airport are traditionally higher than in the city. If you plan to have a full lunch or dinner, it is better to do so before arriving at the airport in Fuzuli.

Travel Tips

Travelling through Fuzuli International Airport will be easier and more pleasant if you prepare in advance. Follow these tips to ensure your flight goes as smoothly as possible, regardless of whether you are departing from the city of Fuzuli or flying in transit.

Arrival Time at the Airport. For international flights, it is recommended to arrive 2.5–3 hours before departure, and for domestic flights — 1.5–2 hours. This will give you enough time to complete all pre-flight formalities without rushing: check-in, baggage drop-off, and security control.

Check-in and Security Control. If possible, complete online check-in — this will save time. Keep your passport and boarding pass ready. When passing through screening, remove metal objects from your pockets, take off outer clothing, and remove your laptop and liquid containers from your hand luggage in advance.

Seat Selection on the Plane. If the airline allows you to select a seat in advance, consider your preferences. Window seats (A, F) are ideal for those who enjoy admiring the views. Aisle seats (C, D) are convenient if you plan to get up during the flight without disturbing your neighbours.

Hand Luggage Rules. Standard international rules limit the carriage of liquids: they must be in containers up to 100 ml and packed in one transparent bag with a volume of up to 1 litre. Sharp and cutting objects are prohibited. Power banks and other batteries should be carried only in hand luggage, not in checked baggage.

Recommendations for Transfer Passengers. At check-in, clarify whether you will need to collect and re-check your luggage at Fuzuli Airport. Find out which terminal your next flight will be in, and estimate the time needed to transfer between gates.

Passing Customs Control. If you are arriving from abroad, familiarise yourself with customs regulations in advance. Declare goods that are subject to declaration to avoid delays and fines. Usually, this concerns large sums of cash, as well as alcohol and tobacco products exceeding established limits.

How to Save Time and Money. Besides online check-in, you can save money by bringing an empty water bottle, which can be filled after passing security screening. Also, study transfer options from the airport to the city in advance to choose the most advantageous one.

What to Do in Case of Flight Delay. In the event of a delay or cancellation of a flight, first contact your airline representative. Monitor information on the departure boards. Depending on the duration of the delay, the airline is obliged to provide passengers with drinks, meals, and for long waits — hotel accommodation.
