General Weather Overview

The climate in Antwerp, as in all of Belgium, is characterised as temperate maritime. This means that four seasons are clearly defined here, but without sharp temperature fluctuations. The weather can be quite changeable, so tourists should be prepared for various conditions.

Summer in Antwerp is usually warm and comfortable, with average temperatures in July and August around 18-19°C, and maximum values reaching 22-23°C. Winters are generally mild but cool, with an average temperature of about 4-6°C in January and December. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons, with gradual warming or cooling respectively.

One of the characteristic features of the weather in Antwerp is the relatively even distribution of precipitation throughout the year. Although the monthly amount of precipitation is small (on average 2-3 mm), the number of rainy days is quite significant – from 11 to 16 days per month. This suggests that light rain or overcast weather is a frequent occurrence, so having an umbrella or raincoat will be very handy at any time of the year.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Antwerp demonstrates a clear change of seasons, characteristic of a temperate maritime climate. The annual range of average temperatures extends from 4.8°C in January, which is the coldest month, to 19.1°C in August, when the peak of summer heat is observed. Minimum winter temperatures in January drop on average to 2.7°C, and maximum summer temperatures in August can reach 23.2°C. Thus, the city does not experience extreme frosts or exhausting heat, offering generally comfortable conditions for visiting throughout the year.

The summer months, from June to August, in Antwerp are characterised by pleasantly warm weather. Daily average temperatures range from 17.8°C in June to 19.1°C in August. Daytime highs are usually in the range of 22-23°C, creating comfortable conditions for walking and sightseeing. Night-time temperatures drop to 13.5-15.1°C, bringing refreshing coolness. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer is quite perceptible and can reach 8-9°C, which is worth considering when planning evening activities.

Winter in Antwerp, covering the period from December to February, is distinguished by being mild and cool. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 4.8°C, a minimum night-time temperature of about 2.7°C, and a maximum daytime temperature of up to 6.9°C. In December and February, average figures are slightly higher, around 5.8-5.9°C. Night-time temperatures in winter can approach the freezing point, but rarely drop significantly lower. Daytime highs usually hold within 7-9°C. Temperature fluctuations between day and night in winter are less pronounced than in summer, amounting to approximately 4-6°C, however, light frosts at night are not excluded, especially in January.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Antwerp is a year-round phenomenon, and the city does not experience sharp transitions between wet and dry seasons. Instead, travellers should expect a moderate number of wet days in almost any month, although the total volume of falling precipitation remains low.

Analysing the data by months, it can be noted that December stands out with the highest frequency of precipitation, counting on average 16 wet days. It is followed by January, March, August and October, where the number of days with precipitation is about 14. The "driest" in terms of rain frequency, with approximately 11 wet days, turn out to be April, June and September. Notably, the monthly volume of precipitation remains consistently small, mostly around 2 mm, increasing only slightly to 3 mm in February, October and December. This suggests that Antwerp is characterised more by frequent, but short and light precipitation, rather than prolonged downpours.

In winter, especially in the period from December to February, when average temperatures hover around 4-6°C, and night-time minimums can drop to the 0°C mark, precipitation can take the form not only of rain but also of light snow or icy drizzle. However, a stable snow cover or heavy snowfalls are not typical for Antwerp. Regardless of the season, a light raincoat or umbrella will become useful companions during walks around the city.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Antwerp, remember that the weather here can be quite changeable throughout the year. The key to a comfortable journey is layering your clothing. Regardless of the season, be sure to take comfortable shoes for long walks along the charming streets of the city, many of which are paved with cobblestones. Considering that Antwerp counts from 11 to 16 days with precipitation monthly, even with their small total amount, a compact umbrella or a light raincoat, preferably windproof, will become your faithful companions and help ensure your impressions of the city are not dampened.

In the summer months, from June to August, when the average temperature hovers around 18-19°C, and during the day can rise to 22-23°C, you will need light clothing: t-shirts, shorts, dresses, or skirts. However, evenings can be cool (about 13-15°C), so do not forget a light sweater, cardigan, or jacket. Sunscreen will also come in handy on clear days. In winter, from December to February, average temperatures hold at the 4-6°C mark, so pack warm things: sweaters, a fleece jacket, an insulated and preferably waterproof jacket, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves, to feel comfortable during winter walks.

For the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) months, when the weather in Antwerp is particularly unpredictable, and the temperature varies from cool to moderately warm, the principle of layering becomes especially relevant. We recommend taking t-shirts, long-sleeved tops, jumpers, and a waterproof jacket or raincoat with you. This will allow you to easily adapt to the whims of the weather, removing or adding layers of clothing depending on the temperature and the presence of precipitation, and enjoy every moment of your journey through this beautiful city.
