To ensure your journey through the main airport of Belize goes as smoothly as possible, take advantage of these tips. Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) is compact and quite convenient, but preparation is never superfluous.
Arrival Time at the Airport. For international flights, it is recommended to arrive at the airport 2.5-3 hours before departure. This time is sufficient to check in without haste, drop off luggage, and pass through all controls. For domestic flights, arriving 1.5-2 hours in advance is sufficient.
Check-in and Security. The airport in Belize City is not as large as global hubs, so queues here are usually shorter. Nevertheless, to save time, complete online check-in if your airline provides this option. Security checkpoints are standard: be prepared to remove outer clothing, belts, and take all metal items out of your pockets. Laptops and other large electronics must be removed from bags.
Choosing a Seat on the Plane. When flying into or out of Belize, choose a window seat — views of the Caribbean Sea and the barrier reef can be simply stunning, especially during takeoff and landing. If comfort and the ability to stretch your legs are more important to you, choose an aisle seat.
Hand Luggage. Liquids in containers of no more than 100 ml, packed in a transparent bag, are allowed in hand luggage. Sharp objects, such as knives and scissors, are prohibited. Be sure to place all valuables, documents, medication, portable chargers, and essentials in your hand luggage.
Transfer Passengers. Many travellers transfer at BZE to domestic flights to the islands (for example, Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker). Terminals for local airlines, such as Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, are located in immediate proximity to the main building. Transferring between them will not take much time, and the check-in process for local flights is usually very fast.
Customs Control. Upon arrival, you will need to complete an immigration and customs declaration. Please be honest when declaring goods, especially food items, plants, and animal products. When departing the country, a Departure Tax is charged, but most often it is already included in the cost of your air ticket. It is recommended to verify this point with your airline.
Saving Time and Money. Book your transfer from the airport in advance to avoid inflated prices on arrival. Bring an empty reusable water bottle with you — after passing security control, you can fill it at drinking fountains.
Flight Delays. In the event of a flight delay, first contact your airline representative for information on the new departure time and possible compensation (meals, accommodation). There are several cafes and shops in the airport where you can spend time while waiting.
