Known among locals as the "pink mansion," the museum building was constructed in 1898 and is a brilliant example of late 19th-century Italian architecture. After a complete restoration in 1996, the mansion was transformed into a modern museum center, where the region's history is presented through unique collections of artifacts, furniture, and documents.

A visit to this place offers not only a glimpse into the lives of the early settlers but also insights into the visits of major historical figures, including Emperor Pedro II. The museum harmoniously combines education and aesthetic pleasure, making it an essential stop for those who want to understand the cultural code of this famous thermal resort.

What to Do

The museum's main exhibit is undoubtedly the Villa Junqueira building itself. Walking through its halls, you feel transported back to the end of the 19th century: high ceilings, elegant interior lines, and the spirit of an aristocratic past create a unique atmosphere. Visitors can take a close look at the furniture collection of the city's first residents, which provides a vivid picture of daily life over a century ago.

\n\n

History buffs will enjoy exploring the rich archive of photographs and documents. A point of pride for the museum are the exhibits dedicated to visits from prominent figures, such as Emperor Dom Pedro II and President Juscelino Kubitschek. Additionally, there is an impressive collection of rocks and minerals from the Poços de Caldas plateau, showcasing the geological wealth of these lands.

\n\n

For a deeper immersion, the museum offers themed exhibitions and visual timelines that illustrate the transformation of a small settlement into a thriving resort. Thanks to its high rating among tourists and the opportunity to participate in cultural programs, a visit to the museum becomes an interactive history lesson that will interest both adults and young travelers.

Getting There

Its location in the very city center makes the Historic-Geographic Museum extremely accessible for tourists. It is situated in the Urca district, in close proximity to other iconic landmarks, such as the former casino building. If you are staying in the central part of the city, a walk to the "pink mansion" will be a pleasant addition to your sightseeing tour.

\n\n

For those who prefer public transport, the main city bus routes pass near the museum. You can also always use taxis or ride-sharing apps, which will take you exactly to Villa Junqueira. For travelers arriving by car, there are parking zones in the vicinity; however, spaces may be limited on weekends due to the popularity of the central district.

History & Facts

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the development of the region and the initiative of local residents. The museum was founded on October 28, 1972, by a group of enthusiastic volunteers to mark the city's centennial. During its first decades, the collection was housed in a local country club, gradually growing through generous donations from citizens eager to preserve their history for future generations.

\n\n

The exhibition found its true home in Villa Junqueira — an architectural masterpiece from 1898. Originally, the building was named Vila Albertina, in honor of the wife of its first owner, Martinico Prado Júnior. Later, the mansion passed into the ownership of Colonel Agostinho José da Costa Junqueira. Throughout its long life, this "pink mansion" has changed many roles: in the 1930s it housed a hospital, followed by a hotel, a warehouse, and even a school that operated until 1995.

\n\n

In the mid-90s, as part of the "Centro Vivo" project, the building was meticulously restored, and in December 1996, the museum triumphantly opened its doors within these historic walls. Since 1985, the mansion has been protected by the cultural heritage council (CONDEPHACT), serving as an official architectural monument that preserves the Italian style of the late 19th century.

Time Needed

For a standard tour of the main halls and an introduction to the building's architecture, 1.5–2 hours is sufficient for most visitors. This is enough time to leisurely examine Victorian-era furniture, look at old photographs, and appreciate the mineralogical collection.

\n\n

If you are a history enthusiast and plan to study archival documents and iconography in detail, or use a guide for a deeper dive into the context, we recommend setting aside about 3 hours for your visit. The museum's calm atmosphere is perfect for thoughtful study of the exhibits and taking a break from the city bustle.
