In the heart of the Caribbean coast rises the Sacred Heart Cathedral—an architectural landmark that Puerto Limón is proud of. This cathedral is not just the city's main Catholic church, but also an impressive symbol of the local community's resilience. The modern building was erected on the site of the original church, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1991.

Designed by the renowned Mexican architect Raúl Goddard, the cathedral is a bold example of modernism in Costa Rica. Its appearance is characterized by the use of exposed concrete and wide-open spaces. The main hall was designed without internal columns, creating a remarkable sense of space and freedom during services.
The interior harmoniously combines historical relics with contemporary art. Here, you can see antique stained glass and a unique cross by sculptor Jiménez Deredia. It is a place where strict concrete lines meet the soft light filtering through the stained glass, inviting every visitor to feel an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
