General Weather Character

The climate in Turku can be described as temperate continental with noticeable maritime influences, which is typical for the southern part of Finland. The city experiences four distinct seasons. Winters here are cold, with average monthly temperatures below zero, especially in January and February, when the thermometer averages -2.6°C and -3.1°C respectively. Summer, on the other hand, is moderately warm, with peak temperatures in July (averaging 17.5°C) and August (16.8°C), offering comfortable conditions for walking and exploring the city.

Spring and autumn in Turku are transitional seasons. In spring, the temperature gradually rises starting in March, reaching an average of 10.1°C by May. In autumn, the reverse process occurs: September is still relatively warm (12.4°C), but by November the average temperature drops to 3.0°C. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, with a slight increase in the number of rainy days during the summer and autumn months. On average, the amount of precipitation is low, about 1-3 mm per month, but the number of days with precipitation ranges from 9 to 15 per month, indicating frequent but not heavy rains or snowfall during the winter period.

Thus, when planning a trip to Turku, it is worth considering significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. The summer months offer the warmest weather, ideal for outdoor activities. In winter, one should be prepared for frosty weather and possible snow, which creates a special atmosphere for winter entertainment. The off-season is characterized by changeable weather, so layering your clothes will be the most practical choice.

Temperature

The climate in Turku is characterized by noticeable seasonal temperature fluctuations. The coldest month is usually February, when the average temperature is around -3.1°C, and nightly lows can drop to -5.7°C. January is also frosty, with an average temperature of -2.6°C. Conversely, the warmest month is July, when the average temperature reaches +17.5°C, and daytime highs can rise to +21.2°C. Thus, the annual range of average temperatures in Turku is quite wide, from freezing winter values to comfortable summer warmth.

Summer months in Turku, especially June, July, and August, offer pleasant warm weather. In July, the hottest month, daytime temperatures often exceed +20°C, creating ideal conditions for walking and outdoor activities. Nights remain relatively cool, with average lows around +13.7°C in July, ensuring comfortable sleep. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer can be around 7-8°C, which is a moderate fluctuation.

Winter in Turku brings frosty weather, especially from December to February. During these months, the air temperature consistently stays below zero. Daytime highs in January and February rarely rise above -0.5°C, and night frosts are a common occurrence. For example, in February, the average minimum temperature is -5.7°C. Fluctuations between day and night temperatures in winter are less pronounced than in summer, amounting to approximately 4-5°C. The transitional seasons, spring and autumn, show a gradual change in temperatures: April already brings positive average values (around +4.1°C), and October sees a noticeable cooling down to +7.2°C.

Precipitation

In Turku, precipitation is distributed quite evenly throughout the year in terms of total volume, and there is no distinct rainy season or dry period. However, the frequency of precipitation varies noticeably from month to month. Overall, the monthly amount of precipitation is low, indicating predominantly light rain and snowfall.

The winter period, roughly from December to March, is characterized by negative average temperatures, so precipitation here falls mainly in the form of snow. January and December, along with the summer and autumn months, are distinguished by a high number of days with precipitation. With the arrival of spring, usually in April, and until October, precipitation falls mainly as rain, as temperatures become positive.

The highest amount of precipitation by volume (3 mm) falls in July and August. However, in terms of frequency of days with precipitation, August and October lead, each having an average of 15 days with precipitation. This suggests that during these periods, rains can be frequent but generally not too intense. The "driest" months in terms of precipitation amount are April and May (1 mm each), which also, along with February, March, and June, have the lowest number of days with precipitation — about 9 days per month. Thus, frequent but mostly light precipitation throughout most of the year is characteristic for Turku.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Turku, it is important to choose the right wardrobe, taking into account Finland's changeable weather. In winter (from December to March), freezing temperatures are expected, averaging from -0.5°C to -5.7°C, so very warm clothing is necessary: thermal underwear, fleece sweaters, a down jacket or a warm parka (preferably wind and waterproof), a hat, a scarf, and gloves. Despite the small amount of precipitation (about 2 mm per month), the number of days with precipitation (snow or wet snow) is quite high (9-14 days), so waterproof shoes will be very useful.

In spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), the weather is variable. The temperature in April hovers around +4°C, rises to +10°C in May, and in autumn gradually decreases from +12°C in September to +7°C in October. By November it is already cool, around +3°C. In these seasons, the principle of layering is ideal: t-shirts, long-sleeve tops, sweaters, a light jacket, and a warmer windbreaker or mid-season coat. Don't forget an umbrella or raincoat, as there are still many rainy days (9-15 per month), and comfortable waterproof shoes for long walks around the city.

Summer in Turku (June-August) is quite mild and pleasant, with average temperatures from +15°C to +17.5°C; sometimes the air warms up to +20-21°C. Light clothing will suffice: t-shirts, shorts, dresses, but be sure to bring a sweater or light jacket for evening walks or in case of cool weather. Although the amount of precipitation is small (2-3 mm), rainy days are still frequent (9-15 per month), so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will not go amiss. On sunny days, sunscreen and a hat will be useful. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion in exploring Turku.
