What to Do

Guests of the estate can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of 19th-century aristocratic life by taking a stroll through the castle's grand staterooms. Here you will see authentic furniture of that era, elegant paintings by Eugène Lami, and impressive figures of atlantes by Charles Cordier. Special attention should be paid to the central patio hall, where the glass roof—innovative for its time—creates a stunning play of light.

Nature lovers should definitely make time for the English park. A walk along its terraces offers panoramic views of the architectural ensemble, while the vast territory of several thousand hectares allows you to find secluded spots for relaxation. It is an excellent place for quiet reflection and contemplating landscape design, which is considered one of the best in the Parisian suburbs.

In addition to exploring the architecture, visitors often enjoy photoshoots here, as every facade of the castle and its towers is extremely photogenic. During the warmer months, you can enjoy a picnic on the park grounds, and the rich history of this site, associated with visits from kings and great figures, makes every step along the alleys truly educational.

History & Facts

The history of this magnificent estate began in 1829 when Baron James Mayer de Rothschild purchased extensive lands from the Duke of Otranto. Desiring to create something truly grand, he turned to the famous English architect Joseph Paxton. Legend has it that the client set the task: "Build me a Mentmore, but twice the size."

The construction of the castle took place from 1855 to 1859, and its grand opening was held in December 1862 in the presence of Emperor Napoleon III himself. For a long time, the castle remained a private residence, hosting monarchs, diplomats, and the most influential people in Europe. The building's architecture became a benchmark of the Neo-Renaissance style, combining the power of English estates with the elegance of Italian villas.

Until 1975, the castle belonged to the Rothschild family and was passed down through the male line. However, the family later decided to donate this historical monument to the University of Paris. Today, Château de Ferrières is recognized as a cultural heritage site that has preserved the atmosphere of incredible wealth and 19th-century aesthetics known as the "Rothschild taste."

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the grandeur of the interiors and the beauty of the surrounding landscapes, guests are recommended to allocate at least 2–3 hours for their visit. Usually, about an hour and a half is spent touring the inner halls and the central patio, while the remaining time is perfect for a leisurely stroll through the park terraces.

If you plan to use an audio guide or book a detailed group tour, it is worth scheduling up to 4 hours. This will allow you to study the fine decorative details without rushing, enjoy the atmosphere of the English park, and take commemorative photos against the backdrop of the castle's monumental towers.
