How to get to the airport

There are several ways to get to Kannur International Airport (CNN), located approximately 28 kilometres from the city centre of Kannur. A car journey usually takes between 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic conditions. The choice of transport depends on your budget, time, and comfort preferences.

Public Transport

The most budget-friendly way to reach the airport is via the KSRTC state transport corporation buses. They operate on several routes, connecting the airport with bus stations in Kannur, Thalassery, and Iritty. Although this is the most economical option, it is worth checking the schedule in advance, especially if you have an early morning or late-night flight. There is no direct rail connection to the airport. The nearest major railway stations are in Kannur and Thalassery, from where you will need to take a taxi or bus to the airport.

Taxi and Private Transfer

A taxi is the most convenient and fastest way to reach the airport. In the arrivals hall, there is a pre-paid taxi counter where you can book a car at a fixed rate, which helps avoid overpaying. Popular ride-hailing app services in India, such as Uber and Ola, also operate in the region. For maximum convenience, especially if you are travelling with family or large luggage, you can book a private transfer in advance.

Car Rental and Parking

For those who prefer to explore the region on their own, car rental services are available at the airport. This is an excellent option for flexible travel across the scenic spots of Kerala. If you are arriving at the airport in your own or a rented vehicle, a spacious parking area with zones for both short-term and long-term parking is at your disposal.

Other Airports Nearby

Although Kannur International Airport is a key transport hub for northern Kerala, other regional airports might be convenient depending on your itinerary. These include Calicut International Airport (97 km), Mangalore Airport (136 km), and Coimbatore International Airport (190 km). Airports in Mysore (128 km) and Shivamogga (215 km) are also nearby.

Terminals and Map

Kannur International Airport (CNN) is a modern and compact aviation hub distinguished by a thoughtful and passenger-friendly structure. The airport consists of one integrated terminal that handles both domestic and international flights. This organisation significantly simplifies navigation and saves travellers from the need to move between different buildings.

The terminal layout is intuitive. The building has several levels: the departure zone is located on the upper floor, and the arrival zone is on the lower floor. Upon entering the terminal, you find yourself in a spacious check-in hall where airline counters are located. After receiving a boarding pass and dropping off luggage, passengers proceed to security checkpoints. For international flights, a passport control (immigration) zone is provided.

Because all processes are concentrated in one building, transitions between zones take minimal time. Navigating the terminal is straightforward: clear signs in English and Malayalam are installed everywhere. Airport staff are always ready to assist and direct passengers.

To go through all pre-flight formalities without rushing, it is recommended to arrive at the airport in advance. For domestic flights, it is advisable to arrive 1.5–2 hours before departure, and for international flights, 2.5–3 hours. This time is usually sufficient for check-in, luggage drop-off, as well as customs and passport control if necessary. During peak hours and holidays, procedures may require more time.

The main tip for navigating Kannur Airport is simply to follow the signs. Remember a simple rule: departures are upstairs, arrivals are downstairs. Thanks to the compactness and modern layout, you will easily find your boarding gate or orient yourself upon arrival, making the journey through this airport as comfortable as possible.

Airport History

International Airport Kannur (CNN) is one of the youngest and most modern airports in India, whose history is primarily one of an ambitious project realised in record time for such a large-scale construction. Although the idea of creating an airport in the northern part of Kerala to serve the Malabar region had been discussed since the 1990s, it only came to fruition in the 21st century.

The airport was built from scratch under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model managed by Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL). Active construction work began in 2014, and just four years later, its grand opening took place. Officially, Kannur International Airport received its first commercial flight on 9 December 2018, which was a landmark event for the entire state. Thousands of local residents attended the opening ceremony, highlighting how long-awaited this moment was.

One of the key achievements of the project is its modern infrastructure. The airport boasts a runway length of 3,050 metres, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, which immediately opened opportunities for direct long-haul flights. The passenger terminal, with architecture inspired by the region's rich cultural heritage, is one of the largest in South India.

As the airport is new, its history has not yet been marked by major renovations. On the contrary, it is itself the result of a major modernisation of the transport system of northern Kerala. Since opening, the airport has played a key role in connecting the region with the world, especially with the Gulf countries where a large part of the local diaspora works, and also contributes to the growth of tourism and trade in this picturesque part of India.

Services and Amenities

Kannur International Airport (CNN) is a modern and comfortable aviation hub in southern India, offering passengers all necessary services. In the terminal, you will find various cafes and restaurants where you can have a snack before departure — from fast food outlets to places serving local and international cuisine. For shopping enthusiasts, there are shops, including a Duty Free zone, featuring a wide range of perfumes, cosmetics, and souvenirs.

For a comfortable wait for their flight, passengers can use premium lounges (VIP lounges), offering a more private atmosphere, snacks, and beverages. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, and numerous mobile device charging stations allow you to stay connected at all times.

The airport operates bank branches, ATMs, and currency exchange points, making it easy to handle all financial matters upon arrival or before departure. To ensure passenger safety and health, a medical centre operates around the clock, where first aid can be obtained if necessary.

The airport is well-equipped for travellers with children: there are special mother and child rooms for infant care. Passengers with reduced mobility are provided with all necessary assistance, including wheelchairs, ramps, and specially equipped restrooms, making their stay at the airport as convenient as possible.

For business travellers, business services and conference rooms for meetings may be available. Although there are no hotels directly within the airport building, several hotels of varying comfort levels are located in the immediate vicinity, where you can rest between flights or before an early departure.

Where to eat

At Kannur International Airport (CNN), passengers will find a decent selection of establishments for a quick snack or a full meal. Dining outlets are located both in the public area before security control (landside) and in the secure departure zone (airside). The main food court, where major restaurants are concentrated, is located in the departure hall, immediately after passing security checks, which is particularly convenient for passengers waiting to board domestic and international flights.

The airport offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the authentic cuisine of Kerala. Do not miss the chance to try local hits such as the spicy crepe masala dosa, steamed rice cakes idli, or lentil doughnuts vada. This is a great way to enjoy the flavours of southern India right before departure. For those who prefer more familiar food, international options are always available: sandwiches, pizza, pastries, and good coffee.

Thanks to local culinary traditions, it is easy to find vegetarian and vegan dishes at the airport. Many establishments also offer a Halal menu. Coffee shops and small kiosks are perfect for a quick bite, while restaurants in the food court are suitable for a substantial meal. Most establishments are open from the first morning flight until the last night flight. Be prepared that prices here will be approximately 20-30% higher than in city cafes, which is standard practice for airports.

Travel Tips

To ensure your journey through Kannur International Airport (CNN) is as comfortable and hassle-free as possible, make use of our tips. These simple recommendations will help you navigate the airport, save time, and avoid stressful situations.

Check-in and Security Control. To avoid queues at check-in counters and complete all pre-flight formalities without rushing, take advantage of the option to check in online on your airline's website. Security procedures at Indian airports can be quite thorough, so allow sufficient time for them. Prepare in advance: remove laptops and other large electronics from bags, and ensure that all liquids in hand luggage comply with the rules.

Seat Selection. A window seat will give you magnificent views of the Kerala coast during takeoff or landing. If freedom of movement and extra legroom are more important to you, choose an aisle seat. For long flights, it is worth studying the aircraft layout on specialised websites in advance to avoid ending up near the lavatory or in a row with non-reclining seats.

Hand Luggage Rules. Pay close attention to the contents of your hand luggage. All liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of no more than 100 ml and packed in a single transparent bag. Electronic cigarettes and power banks are permitted only in hand luggage. Sharp objects, weapons, and flammable substances are strictly prohibited.

Transfer Passengers. If you have a connecting flight, check in advance whether you need to collect your luggage and check in for the next flight again. Usually, when flying with the same airline or alliance, luggage is checked through to the final destination. If you have separate tickets, you will likely have to go through all procedures again, including potential passport and customs control.

Customs Control. Upon arrival at the airport from another country, you will need to pass through customs. If you have no goods to declare, follow the Green Channel. If you are carrying items that exceed duty-free limits (for example, restricted items, high-value electronics), you must go through the Red Channel and declare these goods.

Saving Time and Money. A pre-booked transfer or taxi via online apps often costs less than finding a car on the spot. To avoid spending money on water at the airport, bring an empty bottle with you and fill it at drinking fountains after passing security control.

In Case of Flight Delay. If your flight is delayed, first contact the airline representative for information. Depending on the duration of the delay, you may be provided with vouchers for food and drinks, and for long delays, hotel accommodation. Keep all receipts for necessary expenses so that you can claim compensation later.
