General Weather Overview

Puducherry in India is distinguished by a distinct tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures throughout the year. Average annual temperatures fluctuate slightly, remaining in a comfortable warm range from 25°C to 31°C. This means travellers can expect warm or hot weather regardless of the time of their visit.

Several seasons can be distinguished in the city. A hot and predominantly dry period lasts from February to May, when rainfall is minimal, and temperatures reach their peak values, especially in April and May (average highs up to 32-33°C). From June to September, the temperature remains high, but the number of rainy days gradually increases, heralding the main monsoon season. The wettest months are October and November, when the highest amount of precipitation falls and the maximum number of rainy days is observed (up to 24 days in November). December and January bring some relief from the heat and lower humidity, although the weather remains warm.

Thus, the climate in Puducherry can be described as hot year-round, with a distinct rainy season that peaks in October-November. The driest and sunniest months are from February to April, while more frequent rainfall should be expected from June to November.

Temperature

Puducherry experiences a tropical climate with relatively stable high temperatures throughout the year. The average annual temperature fluctuates slightly, but hotter and cooler periods can be distinguished. The hottest months are usually May and June, when the average temperature reaches about 30.7°C - 30.9°C, and maximum daytime values can rise to 33.6°C - 33.9°C. The "coolest" months are considered to be January and December, with an average temperature of about 25.0°C - 25.5°C. Minimum night-time temperatures in these months drop on average to 22.3°C - 23.2°C.

The summer period in Puducherry, covering the months from April to June, is characterized as hot and humid. Daytime temperatures consistently exceed 30°C, often reaching 32-34°C. Nights also remain warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 26-27°C. The winter months, from December to February, bring milder and more pleasant weather. Daytime temperatures at this time usually stay in a comfortable range of 27-29°C, and nights become noticeably cooler, but without sharp drops, remaining within 22-24°C.

The difference between day and night temperatures in Puducherry is not very large, but perceptible. On average, the daytime maximum exceeds the night-time minimum by 5-7°C during most of the year. This means that even in the hottest months, evenings and nights bring some relief from the daytime heat, and in cooler months, nights can be refreshing, but not cold.

Precipitation

In Puducherry, there is a distinct seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The climate is characterized by a distinct dry period and a wet season, which is typical for this region of India. Given the high average annual temperatures, precipitation here falls exclusively in the form of rain.

The dry season in Puducherry is most noticeable from February to April. February and March stand out as the driest months, when rainfall tends toward zero, and rainy days number only 2-3. In January and April, minimal precipitation also falls (2 mm and 1 mm respectively), and the number of days with rain remains small – 8 and 6 days respectively. May is also relatively dry, with 2 mm of precipitation and 7 rainy days.

The wet season begins in June, when the number of rainy days increases to 13, although the volume of precipitation is still small (2 mm). Gradually, the frequency and intensity of rains increase, reaching their peak in autumn. November is the wettest month of the year, when an average of 11 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 24. October is also very rainy: 7 mm of precipitation and about 21 days with rain. In July, August, and September, a significant number of wet days is also observed (16-17 days), while the amount of precipitation is 3-4 mm. By December, the intensity of rains decreases (5 mm of precipitation, 14 rainy days), indicating a transition to a drier period.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Puducherry, it is important to consider its tropical climate. Warm weather prevails here year-round, with average temperatures from 25°C to 31°C, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget sunscreen with high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat for protection against the intense sun. Comfortable walking shoes, for example, sandals or light trainers, will make your walks around the city as comfortable as possible, as you will have a lot to explore on foot.

Puducherry has a pronounced rainy season, which lasts approximately from June to November, with peak rainfall and the highest number of rainy days in October and November (up to 11 mm of precipitation and 24 rainy days in November). During these months, be sure to take a light raincoat or a compact umbrella with you. It is better to choose clothes made of quick-drying materials. It is also worth thinking about waterproof shoes or sandals that are not afraid of moisture, and insect repellent, as insects may be more active during this humid period.

The period from December to March is characterized as the driest and slightly less hot, with average temperatures around 25-27°C and minimal precipitation (for example, in February and March there is practically no rainfall). At this time, summer clothes are still comfortable during the day, but for evening walks, especially in January when the minimum temperature can drop to 22°C, a light cardigan or shawl may come in handy. April and May are the hottest months, when the average temperature reaches 30°C and above, so choose the lightest and light-coloured items possible, drink enough water, and try to avoid direct sunlight at noon.
