General Weather Conditions

The climate in Salem, India, can be described as tropical, with high temperatures prevailing throughout the year. There are no sharp seasonal temperature fluctuations, making the weather quite stable in terms of warmth. Average daily maximum temperatures usually stay above 28°C, and in the hottest months, such as April, can reach and exceed 36°C.

Two main periods are clearly distinguishable in Salem. From January to April, there is a dry and very hot season, with temperatures peaking in March and April, when rainfall is minimal (0-1 mm) and the number of rainy days is low (from 1 to 7 days). Starting from May until November, a period with more frequent rainfall begins. Although the total amount of rain remains relatively small (a maximum of 6 mm per month), the number of rainy days during this period increases significantly, reaching 16-20 days per month from May to October. Temperatures remain high during this time, but frequent rainfall can bring brief relief.

Thus, tourists planning a visit to Salem should be prepared for hot weather at any time of the year. The sultriest and driest months are March and April. The period from May to November is characterized by frequent, but generally not too heavy, rains. December and January offer slightly more moderate temperatures within the city's overall warm climate (average daily temperature around 24.2°C) and less rainfall compared to the summer and autumn months.

Temperature

The climate in Salem is characterized by high temperatures throughout the year, with a distinct hot period. The hottest month is usually April, when the average temperature reaches 30.8°C, and maximum values can rise to 36.2°C. It is followed by March with an average temperature of 28.8°C and highs up to 34.7°C, as well as May, where the average temperature is 29.9°C with maximums around 34.6°C. January and December are considered the coolest months, with an average temperature of about 24.2°C. Minimum night-time temperatures in these months drop on average to 19.2°C - 20.4°C, while daytime highs stay around 28-29°C.

The summer period in Salem, covering the months from March to June, is distinguished by very hot weather. Daytime temperatures regularly exceed 30°C, and at the peak of the heat (April-May) can reach 35-36°C. Nights also remain warm, and minimum temperatures at night in summer usually stay in the range of 23-25°C. The winter months, from December to February, bring relative coolness, especially at night, when the temperature can drop to 19-20°C. During the day, however, the weather remains pleasantly warm, with maximum values around 28-31°C. Noticeable daily temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the year, where the difference between daytime highs and night-time lows can be about 10-12 degrees, which is especially perceptible during the drier months.

Precipitation

In the city of Salem, there is a fairly clear division of the year into drier and wetter periods, with precipitation falling exclusively as rain, as snow is not characteristic of this region. The total amount of precipitation during the year is not very large, indicating the predominantly light nature of the rains.

The driest months in Salem are February and March. At this time, the amount of precipitation tends towards zero, and only one or two rainy days are recorded for the entire month. January is also distinguished by a small amount of rainfall (1 mm) and only four rainy days. April, although showing a slight increase in the number of wet days to seven, still remains very dry in terms of total precipitation volume (1 mm).

The period from May to November is characterized by an increase in both the amount of precipitation and the number of rainy days. The greatest amount of rainfall occurs in September and October – 6 mm in each, while October also sees the maximum number of days with precipitation, reaching 20 days, the same as in July. July and August bring about 4 mm of rainfall each, distributed over 18-20 days. Even in the "wettest" months, given the total amount of precipitation, rains likely take the form of light or moderate drizzle rather than heavy downpours. For example, in June, 3 mm of rain falls over 19 rainy days, and in November – 5 mm over 18 rainy days.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Salem, it is important to consider its predominantly warm and humid climate. The average annual temperature is comfortable, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Do not forget to bring sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection, especially between March and May, when temperatures reach their maximum values. Even in the coolest months, such as January and December, when the average temperature stays around 24°C and the minimum can drop to 19-20°C, a light cardigan or shawl will be sufficient for evening walks.

Particular attention should be paid to the seasonality of rainfall. The period from January to March is characterized by minimal rain. However, from May to November, and especially from June to October, the number of rainy days increases significantly, although the total amount of precipitation remains moderate. During these months, it is recommended to bring a compact umbrella or a light waterproof jacket. Despite the rain, the air temperature remains high. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as you will be moving around a lot while exploring the city and its surroundings. Insect repellent may also prove useful, especially for the evening time.
