General Weather Overview

Visakhapatnam, located in India, is characterized by a tropical climate with high humidity throughout most of the year. Temperature fluctuations during the year are not very significant, ensuring warm or hot weather almost constantly. The average annual temperature stays at a comfortable level, rarely dropping below 18°C even in the coolest months.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguishable in the city: dry and wet. The dry season usually lasts from January to May, when rainfall is minimal (0-1 mm) and the number of rainy days is low. During this period, the weather is predominantly sunny and hot, especially in April and May, when average maximum temperatures can reach 34-35°C. From June to October, the monsoon season arrives, bringing the bulk of the precipitation (up to 8 mm per month) and a significant increase in the number of rainy days (up to 25 in July and September). Temperatures during this period remain high but may feel more comfortable due to the rain.

November and December are transitional months when the amount of rainfall and rainy days gradually decreases, giving way to drier and cooler (by local standards) weather. Overall, Visakhapatnam offers warm weather year-round, but tourists should consider the distinct rainy season when planning a trip, especially if beach holidays and outdoor activities are preferred.

Temperature

Visakhapatnam, situated on the coast of India, features a tropical climate with noticeable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The average annual temperature varies from a pleasant 23.2°C in January to a hot 31.0°C in May. The hottest months are traditionally considered to be April and May, when average daily highs reach 34.7°C. The coolest period is January, with average minimum temperatures around 18.8°C, providing comfortable conditions after the hot season.

The summer season in Visakhapatnam, which typically lasts from March to June, brings a significant rise in temperature. Already in March, the average temperature is around 28.0°C, gradually increasing by May to a peak of 31.0°C. During this period, the daytime heat is often felt more intensely due to high maximum temperature readings, reaching 32-34°C and above. From June, despite the persistence of high average temperatures (around 30.5°C), the monsoon season begins, accompanied by increased humidity and a significant number of rainy days. Thus, summer, especially its second half, is characterized as hot and humid.

The winter months, from November to February, offer residents and visitors of Visakhapatnam significant relief from the summer heat. Average temperatures during this period range from 23.5°C in December to 25.9°C in November. Nights become noticeably cooler, especially in January (average minimum 18.8°C) and December (average minimum 19.9°C). The difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows in the winter and early spring months (for example, in February the difference is about 10°C, from 20.0°C to 30.0°C) is more perceptible than at the peak of the monsoon (July-September), when high humidity and cloud cover smooth out diurnal temperature fluctuations, reducing the difference to 5°C. Overall, winter in Visakhapatnam is mild and very pleasant for visiting.

Precipitation

The city of Visakhapatnam experiences distinct seasonality in precipitation, characteristic of a monsoon climate. The dry season prevails from January to April, when rainfall is minimal, and in some months, such as January, February, March, and April, no precipitation is recorded at all. During these months, the number of rainy days ranges from 2 to 3.

The transition to the wet season begins in May, when about 1 mm of precipitation falls and there are approximately 5 rainy days. The real rainy season unfolds from June to October. The peak of precipitation falls in July and September, when an average of 8 mm falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 25 and 24 respectively. August is also a very wet month with 7 mm of precipitation and 21 rainy days. In June and October, rains are also frequent, with 18 rainy days in each of these months, and precipitation amounts of 4 mm and 5 mm respectively. The nature of the precipitation during this period is typically showery.

From November, the intensity and frequency of rains begin to decline. In November, about 2 mm of precipitation falls across 8 rainy days, and in December – also 2 mm of precipitation, but across just 5 rainy days, marking a return to drier conditions. Snow is not characteristic for Visakhapatnam due to high temperatures year-round.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Visakhapatnam, keep in mind that a warm and humid climate awaits you all year round. Average temperatures rarely drop below 23°C, and in the hottest months, from April to June, they can rise to 34-35°C. Therefore, the foundation of your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable items made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Be sure to bring sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and headwear (a hat or cap) to protect against the intense sun. For walking around the city and its surroundings, comfortable open footwear, such as sandals, or light breathable trainers are ideal.

From June to October, Visakhapatnam experiences the monsoon season. Although the total amount of precipitation may not be very large, it rains often during this period – the number of rainy days can reach 18-25 per month. We recommend bringing a compact umbrella or a light waterproof rain jacket. It is also worth prioritising clothes and shoes that dry quickly, in case you get caught in the rain. Insect repellent may also be useful during this period, as insect activity increases in humid weather.

Even in the "coolest" months, from December to February, the daytime temperature in Visakhapatnam remains comfortable, around 27-30°C. However, evenings and early mornings can be slightly fresher, with temperatures dropping to 19-20°C. For such occasions, pack a light cardigan, shawl, or long-sleeved shirt. Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes for long walks and sightseeing will be your best companion. Don't forget to drink enough water, especially on hot and sunny days, to avoid dehydration.
