General Weather Overview

The climate of the city of Ternate can be described as hot and humid tropical, typical of the equatorial latitudes of Indonesia. The weather here is distinguished by remarkable stability: throughout the year, the average air temperature hovers at a comfortable mark of about +26…+27°C. There are no familiar seasonal changes or sharp cooling spells here, so travellers can enjoy the warmth regardless of the month chosen for the trip.

The region is characterised by high humidity and regular precipitation. Unlike some other resorts, it is difficult to distinguish a clearly defined dry season in Ternate: rains occur quite frequently all year round, and the number of rainy days varies from 19 to 27 per month. However, precipitation often takes the nature of short-term tropical downpours, which quickly refresh the air and are replaced by sunshine, so they rarely become a hindrance to a holiday.

Thanks to the consistent temperature regime, where daytime maximums reach +28°C and nighttime minimums rarely drop below +25°C, the city is hospitable at any time. When planning a trip, it is worth considering the likelihood of rain and carrying a light raincoat, but overall, the weather is conducive to exploring the natural beauties and attractions of this picturesque corner.

Temperature

The climate of Ternate is distinguished by amazing stability, characteristic of the equatorial latitudes of Indonesia. Eternal summer reigns here throughout the year, and sharp temperature drops are practically unobserved. Monthly average figures fluctuate within a very narrow range — from 26.2°C to 27.0°C. This means that the concept of "seasonality" here is quite conditional: whenever you arrive, you will be met with warm and humid weather.

The hottest month of the year, according to statistics, is May with an average temperature of 27.0°C and maximums reaching 28.2°C. The calendar summer (June, July, August), on the contrary, brings a barely perceptible "cooling": July and September are considered the coolest months with an average figure of about 26.2°C. The winter months (December, January, February) hold at a stable level of about 26.5°C — 26.7°C, which makes them just as comfortable for a beach holiday as any other time of year.

An important feature of Ternate's temperature regime is the minimal difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The variation is only 2–3 degrees: during the day the air warms up to 27–28°C, and at night it rarely cools down below 25°C. Due to high humidity and the absence of nighttime coolness, the air feels thick and warm around the clock, so light breathable clothing will be appropriate at any time of day.

Precipitation

The climate of Ternate is characterised by high humidity and regular precipitation throughout the year. It is difficult to distinguish a clearly marked dry season here: rains fall quite often, refreshing the warm tropical air. There is no snow in this region of Indonesia; all precipitation falls exclusively in the form of rain.

The "wettest" month, judging by statistics, is June. At this time, the highest number of rainy days is recorded — about 27 per month, and the rainfall level reaches its annual peak. However, even in February, which is considered the "driest" month of the year, travellers can expect about 19 days with precipitation.

Despite the high frequency of rains (on average from 21 to 27 days per month), the total volume of falling moisture remains comparatively small. This indicates that precipitation here is frequent, but, as a rule, short-term and not too intense. We recommend always having a light raincoat or umbrella with you, regardless of the date of your trip.

What to Pack

When preparing for a trip to Ternate, one should orient oneself towards the stably warm and humid equatorial climate. The air temperature here remains practically unchanged throughout the year, staying in a comfortable range from 25°C to 28°C. Therefore, the basis of your luggage should consist of light summer clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Give preference to loose-fitting items that dry quickly and ensure good air circulation.

A feature of the local climate is the high probability of precipitation: rainy days happen here often, from 19 to 27 days a month, regardless of the season. Be sure to take a compact folding umbrella or, what is even more convenient, a light rain poncho that can be quickly thrown on during a sudden tropical downpour. Despite the cloudiness, the sun in Indonesia is very active, so sunscreen with a high protection factor, a hat, and sunglasses are mandatory accessories.

For exploring the city and natural attractions, choose comfortable footwear: sturdy sandals with heel support or light trainers with non-slip soles are excellent for walks. Considering the high humidity, items may take longer to dry than usual, so it is sensible to take several spare sets of t-shirts and underwear. Also, a waterproof case for electronics and documents would not be amiss to protect them from moisture.
