Speelbos Mastbos

About

Imagine a place where centuries-old forestry traditions meet carefree childhood fun. Speelbos Mastbos (Mastbos Play Forest) is a unique natural area in the city of Breda, which is part of the oldest man-made forest in the Netherlands. Established over 500 years ago, this forest was originally intended for shipbuilding needs, but today it has become a favorite spot for family recreation.

The heart of this location is the specialized Speelbos play area, located in the northern part of the forest. Unlike ordinary playgrounds, all the equipment here is harmoniously integrated into the landscape: rope ladders, bridges, and secret paths are hidden among the trees, allowing little adventurers to feel like real wilderness explorers.

The Mastbos territory covers about 570 hectares and impresses with its diversity: from shady coniferous sections to wide linden alleys and picturesque ponds. The Vischven pond particularly stands out, having preserved its outlines since the forest was founded. It is an ideal place for those who want to combine an educational walk with active outdoor play.

What to Do

There is no time to be bored at Speelbos Mastbos for children or adults. The main focus here is on active interaction with nature: children can climb ropes, test their agility on zip lines, and build dens from branches. All play equipment is made of natural materials, creating the atmosphere of a true forest adventure.

For hiking enthusiasts, there are themed routes ranging from short children's trails to long historical paths. You can go in search of forest inhabitants — birds, deer, and pheasants — or enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Vischven pond. Wide avenues such as Lange Dreef are perfect for leisurely strolls, while the heathlands provide an excellent backdrop for beautiful photos.

Cyclists will appreciate the extensive network of paths running through the entire forest. It is also worth paying attention to the information panels telling the story of the "Vierkant van Maurits" (Maurits Square) and other notable points in the forest. For visitors' convenience, it is recommended to download the forest's special app in advance, which will help with navigation and ensure you don't miss the most interesting spots.

Getting There

Reaching this picturesque spot is easy, as it is located right on the edge of the city. The most popular and enjoyable way is to rent a bicycle. From the center, the trip takes only 10–15 minutes along excellent bike paths. If you prefer walking, you can reach the forest entrance from the historic Ginneken Market district in about 10 minutes.

For those traveling by car, free parking is available near the entrance at Bouvignedreef 5. It is easily accessible both from the city and from the highway connecting Antwerp and Rotterdam.

Public transport is also available: you can take a bus to the stops nearest the forest in the Ginneken district, followed by a short walk to the start of the play routes. Alternatively, you can always use a taxi from the city center, which will take no more than 5–7 minutes.

History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. Mastbos was established between 1515 and 1525 by Count Hendrik III van Nassau, an ancestor of the Dutch royal family. Originally, it was a production forest: its timber was used to build ships for the Spanish fleet and masts for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) vessels, as well as for the restoration of Breda Castle.

For centuries, the forest served as a favorite hunting ground for the Lords of Orange. Grand, wide avenues were laid out here, convenient for riding on horseback while watching falconry hunts for pheasants and deer. One of the most interesting historical zones is the "Vierkant van Maurits" (Maurits Square) — a geometrically perfect square with sides of 1,300 meters, outlined by canals and roads by order of Prince Maurice.

In 2017, the forest experienced a symbolic event: due to disease, the famous "Split Beech," which was 260 years old, had to be cut down. A young tree was planted in its place, with a time capsule buried beneath its roots. Today, this woodland is considered the oldest planted coniferous forest in the country, carefully protected by the state as a national treasure.

Time Needed

To simply stroll along the main trails of Speelbos Mastbos and let the children play to their heart's content, you will need about 2–4 hours. This is enough time to enjoy the atmosphere of the old forest and reach the nearest ponds.

If you are planning a full day of relaxation with a picnic by the Vischven pond, a long bike ride through all the historic avenues, and a visit to neighboring estates, it is better to set aside half a day or even a full day. The forest is so large and diverse that you can easily spend time here from morning until evening without feeling bored.

Working Hours

Speelbos Mastbos and the entire adjacent park area are open to visitors 24 hours a day, every day. You can enjoy a walk at dawn or at dusk; however, keep in mind that there is no lighting on the forest trails during the dark hours.

Despite 24/7 access, to check for information about special events or temporary restrictions in certain zones (for example, during bird nesting season), it is recommended to visit the official website of the state forest management, Staatsbosbeheer.
