Doloris Anoma Maze Utrecht

About

Doloris Anoma Maze Utrecht is more than just a museum or an art object; it is a massive interactive space located in the city of Utrecht. Housed in a former railway depot, this surreal world invites guests on a thrilling journey through 70 rooms filled with unique art installations. The Netherlands is famous for its creative projects, but this maze is twice as large as its predecessor in Tilburg and offers a truly deep immersion into art.

The concept of the place is built around the idea of anomalies — physical and visual phenomena that challenge logic and perception. Visitors enter alone, leaving their phones and watches outside the maze to fully focus on their senses. This is a place where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, creating an atmosphere of pure wonder.

The room designs range from hyper-realism to surreal landscapes, utilizing video installations and classical painting. Every space is designed to surprise at every turn, transforming an ordinary walk into a sensory adventure that is impossible to forget.

What to Do

Inside the maze, there is no set route: you decide which way to turn, where to crawl, or where to climb. This makes every experience individual and unpredictable. Exploring the intricate corridors, you will encounter the works of twenty local artists that engage all the senses — from hearing to touch.

For those seeking a thrill, there are extreme elements, such as a jump into a symbolic "black hole" or the opportunity to "fly" through space on an unusual object. The maze doesn't aim to scare, but its elements challenge your imagination and courage.

After your intense adventure, you can relax in a special speakeasy bar. It is the perfect place to recharge, share impressions with fellow explorers, and simply enjoy the atmosphere of mystery that permeates the entire building.

Getting There

The venue is located at 2e Daalsedijk 6, making it easily accessible by both public transport and car. If you are driving, it is most convenient to park at ParkBee Parking Wisselspoor, which is just a few minutes' walk from the entrance.

For those who prefer trains, the route from Utrecht Central Station or the Utrecht Zuilen station takes about 15 minutes on foot. This is a great way to combine a visit to the art object with a brief exploration of the city's industrial districts.

If you are in the city center, you can take a taxi or use a bike rental, which is the most popular way to get around in this region.

History & Facts

The project in Utrecht became a logical continuation of the success of the first Doloris Meta Maze in Tilburg, which opened in 2019. The project’s founder, Joep van Gorp, was inspired by the atmosphere of Berlin's Peristal Singum maze and decided to create something even more grand. An industrial building — a former railway depot on Tweede Daalsedijk — was chosen for the new space.

To create this inner world, 20 artists were selected through an open call. They include both rising talents and well-known masters, such as Margriet van Breevoort and Gijs Frieling. The scale of the work is impressive: more than 70 unique spaces have been created in Utrecht.

An important detail is the confidentiality agreement signed by all artists and project participants. Details of the rooms and routes are kept strictly secret so that every new guest can experience the genuine thrill of discovery without any spoilers before their journey begins.

Time Needed

Exploring all the hidden corners of the maze usually takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. Your visit time depends heavily on your curiosity, your pace, and how long you choose to linger in each room to study the details of the interactive installations.

Don't forget to allow an extra 30–40 minutes to relax in the bar after the finish. This time is necessary to "ground" yourself and discuss the sensory experience before returning to the normal rhythm of life.

Working Hours

The maze welcomes guests daily, offering convenient opening hours for both morning visits and evening adventures. On weekends, the doors open a bit earlier, which is convenient for tourists planning a busy day in the city.
