Imagine a place where time stood still over a hundred years ago. The Madeira Photography Museum – Atelier Vicente's is not just an exhibition space, but the oldest surviving photo studio in Portugal. Located in the heart of Funchal, this museum occupies a historic 19th-century building where four generations of the Vicente family created a visual chronicle of the island.

This unique site is the first and only national museum in Portugal entirely dedicated to the art of photography. After a large-scale renovation in 2019, it was transformed into a modern cultural center while preserving the charm of the old atelier. Its collections house a staggering number of exhibits—about one and a half million copies and hundreds of thousands of original negatives dating back to the 1850s.
The significance of this place lies in the fact that it allows you to see the evolution of photography "from the inside." It features not only photographs but also original equipment, specialized furniture, and backdrops used to create portraits. It is a true treasure trove of memories, revealing to visitors the life and daily customs of Madeira through the lenses of antique cameras.
