Shopping in Beslan is unlikely to be the main purpose of your trip, as the city is not a major commercial center. Nevertheless, you can find all necessary daily goods here, as well as some local products and souvenirs reflecting the flavor of North Ossetia. Trade is mainly concentrated in small shops and markets that serve the needs of local residents.
Main commercial activity in Beslan is generally concentrated along the city's central streets. This is where grocery stores, pharmacies, clothing stores, and household goods shops are located. There are no specialized shopping districts or large pedestrian shopping streets in the city, but by walking through the center, you will be able to find the main retail outlets.
You probably won't find the large, modern shopping and entertainment centers that residents of metropolises are used to in Beslan. Retail is represented mainly by standalone shops or small local shopping houses, where several departments with different goods may be gathered under one roof. These are primarily oriented toward the daily needs of townspeople.
The most colorful place for shopping in Beslan is undoubtedly the local market (or markets, if there are several). Here you can immerse yourself in the true atmosphere of Caucasian trade. At the market, you will find fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, the famous Ossetian cheese, homemade pastries, spices, and herbs. Household goods, clothing, and footwear are also often sold at the market at affordable prices. It's a great place to buy fresh local products and observe the city's daily life.
As souvenirs from Beslan and North Ossetia-Alania, you can bring back gastronomic specialties: authentic Ossetian cheese, local honey, mountain herbs, or spices. You can also look for items made by local craftsmen, if available, such as small objects with national symbols or elements of traditional clothing. It is best to look for such souvenirs at the market or in small shops specializing in local goods. Do not expect a wide variety of tourist souvenir shops.
Most shops in Beslan operate on a standard schedule: from approximately 9:00-10:00 AM to 6:00-7:00 PM, with some staying open longer, especially grocery stores. Markets usually start early in the morning and close after lunch or by evening. On Sundays, some shops may have shorter hours or be closed. Regarding payment, in small shops and especially at the market, cash is preferred. Larger retail outlets may accept bank cards from Russian banks, but it is always better to have a sufficient supply of cash with you.
The Tax Free system for tourists is generally not applied in Beslan's shops. This service is more common in major international airports and shops in major tourist cities in Russia aimed at foreign buyers.
