Travelling through Bovanenkovo Airport, located in the harsh conditions of the Russian North, requires certain preparation. These tips will help make your trip more comfortable and predictable, especially if you are flying to this unique corner of Russia for the first time.
Arrival Time at the Airport. Although Bovanenkovo Airport is not among the largest, it is recommended to arrive well in advance. For domestic flights, the optimal time is 2–2.5 hours before departure. This buffer is sufficient to go through all procedures without rushing, especially during peak periods associated with shift changes.
Check-in and Security. Registration and security control procedures here are standard but may be more thorough due to the strategic importance of the facility. Prepare your passport and boarding pass in advance. During screening, be ready to remove all electronic devices from your hand luggage, including laptops and power banks. To speed up the process, place all metal items in one jacket pocket and remove it before the metal detector frame.
Choosing a Seat on the Plane. If it is possible to choose a seat during check-in, consider your preferences. A window seat (A or F) will give you the opportunity to see stunning views of the endless tundra from a bird's-eye view, especially during takeoff and landing. An aisle seat (C or D) will allow you to stand up freely without disturbing your neighbours.
Hand Luggage. Standard rules for carrying hand luggage apply here: liquids in containers of no more than 100 ml (total volume up to 1 litre), and no sharp objects or flammable substances. It is extremely important to put warm clothes (sweater, hat), a portable charger (power bank), and necessary medications in your hand luggage. The weather in this region is unpredictable, and in case of a flight delay, these items will be indispensable.
Passengers with Transfers. Bovanenkovo Airport mainly serves direct flights and is not a major transit hub. If you do have a transfer planned, be sure to check with the airline whether you will need to collect and re-register your luggage. Allow sufficient time for the transfer, as infrastructure for transit passengers may be limited.
Customs Control. Since the airport serves domestic flights within Russia, there is no customs control (inspection for import/export of goods and currency) here. Passengers only undergo pre-flight screening by the airport security service.
Saving Time and Money. The best way to save time is to complete online check-in for your flight, which usually opens 24 hours before departure. To save money, bring an empty water bottle that can be filled after security, as well as a light snack. Prices for food and drinks in remote airports can be high.
What to Do in Case of Flight Delay. Departure delays due to harsh weather conditions are not uncommon in the Arctic. If a flight delay is announced, contact a representative of your airline. Depending on the length of the wait, you are entitled to beverages, hot meals, and for long delays, hotel accommodation. Remain calm and have a book or a charged gadget on hand to pass the time.
