How to get to the airport

Izhevsk Airport (IJK) is located approximately 15 kilometres east of the city centre. There are several ways to get there or to the city, and the choice depends on your budget, amount of luggage, and available time.

Public transport is the most economical option. Bus No. 331 runs to the airport, departing from the Central Bus Station of Izhevsk. The fare is very affordable and usually does not exceed 50 rubles, but it is better to check the current price immediately before the trip. The journey takes about 40-60 minutes on average, although the time may vary depending on traffic conditions. This method is ideal for travellers with light luggage. We recommend checking the bus schedule in advance, especially if your flight is early in the morning or late at night. There is no direct train or metro connection to the airport.

Taxi or private transfer is the fastest and most comfortable method. A trip from the centre of Izhevsk to the airport will take approximately 20-30 minutes excluding traffic jams. The estimated cost of a trip from the city centre ranges from 400 to 700 rubles, but the price may change depending on demand, time of day, and car class. You can use the services of local taxi companies or order a car through popular mobile apps, which allows you to calculate the cost in advance. A transfer is particularly convenient for families with children, large groups, or passengers with bulky luggage.

For those who prefer maximum freedom of movement, car rental is suitable. Rental company counters can be found both at the airport and in the city. If you are driving to the airport in your own car, there is a paid parking lot on its territory where you can leave your vehicle for a few hours or for a long term.

When planning a trip to Izhevsk, it is also useful to check flights to airports in neighbouring major cities of Russia. Sometimes they can offer a more convenient schedule or better prices. Among them are the airports of Kazan (KZN), Ufa (UFA), and Bolshoye Savino (PEE) in Perm. The closest one is Begishevo (NBC) airport in Nizhnekamsk. However, keep in mind that in this case, you will need an additional ground transfer to Izhevsk, which may take several hours.

Terminals and Map

Since 2023, Izhevsk Airport (IJK) has been welcoming and seeing off passengers in a new modern terminal that serves all domestic flights. This is a spacious and bright building designed according to modern standards, making the stay at the airport significantly more comfortable. The old terminal building is currently not used for regular passenger transport but is being considered for serving international flights in the future.

The layout of the new terminal is logical and intuitive. All main areas for passengers are located on two floors. On the ground floor, there is the public zone: flight check-in counters, baggage handling area, as well as the arrival hall with baggage belts and a waiting area for those meeting passengers. Essential services are also located here.

After completing check-in on the ground floor, passengers proceed to the first floor. Here lies the pre-flight security screening area, after which access opens to the "secure area" — a spacious and comfortable departure lounge. It houses boarding gates, shops, and cafes where you can pass the time before your flight.

Navigating the terminal will not cause difficulties thanks to clear signs in Russian and English. Since all operations for domestic flights are concentrated in one building, transitions between arrival, check-in, and departure zones take minimum time. Despite the efficiency of airport services, it is standard practice to arrive 1.5–2 hours before departure to complete all formalities without haste, especially if you are travelling with luggage.

History of the Airport

The history of aviation in the capital of Udmurtia began long before the appearance of the modern airport. The first regular mail and passenger flights from Izhevsk started back in 1944 from an old airfield. However, with the growth of the city and the development of industry, a need arose for a more modern air harbour capable of receiving large aircraft.

The current airport complex, known to passengers today, was built and opened in 1974. This event became a key moment in the development of the region's transport infrastructure. The airport immediately became the base for the local airline "Izhavia", and its runway was designed to accommodate aircraft common at that time, such as the Yak-42 and Tu-134, connecting the city with dozens of destinations across the country.

A new stage in the life of the airport began in the 21st century. After decades of operation, the infrastructure required a radical update. In 2022, a large-scale project was launched — the construction of a new passenger terminal. Modernization of the airfield complex was carried out in parallel.

A real breakthrough came in 2023, when Izhevsk Airport was granted international status. This opened new horizons for the development of tourism and business ties in the region. The culmination of the modernization was the opening of a new, modern, and spacious terminal in 2024, which significantly improved the quality of passenger service and the capacity of Udmurtia's air gates.

Services and Amenities

Izhevsk Airport (IJK) offers passengers all the necessary services for a comfortable wait for their flight. In the terminal building, you will find a café where you can have a snack before flying, as well as shops selling souvenirs, including those with Udmurtia symbols, and travel essentials. This allows you to pass the time and purchase gifts for loved ones.

Waiting lounges are equipped for passenger convenience. Those who value enhanced comfort can use the services of the Business Lounge, offering a quieter atmosphere, beverages, and snacks. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport, and there are power outlets in the waiting lounges so you can charge your electronic devices before departure.

For travellers with small children, a mother and child room is provided, equipped with everything necessary for baby care. In case of need, passengers can visit the medical point, where first aid will be provided. ATMs for cash withdrawal also operate at the airport. For passengers with reduced mobility, conditions for convenient movement are created, and special assistance is provided during boarding.

If you need to stay overnight, a hotel is located right on the station square. This is particularly convenient for those arriving in Izhevsk late in the evening or flying out early in the morning, allowing you to rest in immediate proximity to the terminal.

Where to Eat

At Izhevsk Airport (IJK), travellers can comfortably have a snack or a full meal while waiting for their flight. Although it is a regional airport, there are several cosy establishments here where you can pleasantly spend time before departure.

In the public zone on the ground floor of the terminal, before pre-flight security screening, a coffee shop of the "Coffee Like" chain operates. This is an excellent place to refresh yourself before the journey by ordering a classic coffee, a signature drink, or tea. The menu also features light snacks such as sandwiches and pastries. The café is convenient for both departing passengers and those meeting them.

After passing security control, in the "clean" zone (airside), a coffee shop of the well-known Russian chain "Shokoladnitsa" is located. Here, the choice of dishes is significantly wider: besides various coffee drinks and desserts, you can order salads, hearty pancakes (blini), pasta, or sandwiches. This is a wonderful option for those who want not just a coffee, but a full meal in a calm atmosphere.

Sometimes, elements of local cuisine can be found in the café menu, for example, the famous Udmurt perepechi — open pies with various fillings. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the region's gastronomy. For those in a hurry, vending machines offering drinks, chocolate, and other snacks are installed in both zones of the airport.

Prices in airport establishments are traditionally higher than in the city. Café opening hours are usually linked to the flight schedule, allowing service for passengers of morning and evening flights. Passengers with specific dietary requirements (such as halal or vegetarian preferences) should check the ingredients with the staff, as the specialized menu is generally limited, though suitable salads or desserts can be found at "Shokoladnitsa".

Travel Tips

To ensure your journey through the airport of Izhevsk city goes as smoothly and comfortably as possible, we have prepared several useful tips. By following these simple recommendations, you can avoid unnecessary stress and save time.

Arrival time and check-in. Izhevsk Airport is not the largest, but it is better not to risk it. We recommend arriving 2-2.5 hours before the departure of domestic flights. This time is sufficient to check in luggage without haste, pass security control, and reach the boarding gate. To save time, use online check-in on your airline's website, which usually opens 24 hours before departure. This will allow you to go straight to the baggage drop-off counter or, if you are flying light, proceed directly to security screening.

Hand luggage rules. Carefully study your airline's requirements regarding the weight and dimensions of hand luggage. Standard restrictions prohibit carrying liquids in containers larger than 100 ml (all must be packed in one transparent bag), as well as sharp objects, weapons, and flammable substances. Always keep gadgets, documents, and valuables with you in your hand luggage.

Seat selection and transfers. During online check-in, you will have the opportunity to select a seat. If you want to admire the clouds, choose a window seat. If you need more legroom or plan to stand up often, an aisle seat is your choice. Izhevsk Airport mainly serves direct flights across Russia. If you have a complex route with a transfer, check in advance whether you will need to collect and re-check your luggage at the transit airport.

Economy and flight delays. To save money, book flight tickets in advance and consider getting to the airport by public transport. Prices for food and drinks in the departure zone are usually higher, so you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it at a drinking fountain after security screening, if available. In case of a flight delay, first contact your airline representative. Depending on the duration of the wait, you are entitled to beverages, hot meals, and for long delays, accommodation in a hotel.

Customs control. This procedure is relevant only for passengers departing on international flights (if such are present in the schedule). For domestic flights within the country, passing customs control is not required, which significantly simplifies and speeds up pre-flight formalities.
