General Weather Overview

The climate in Kahramanmaras combines features of Mediterranean and continental types. The weather here changes quite distinctly depending on the season: travellers can expect a hot, sunny summer and a cool, rather humid winter. Thanks to this diversity, the city offers a unique atmosphere in every season.

The summer period, especially July and August, is characterised by high temperatures and aridity. During the day, the air often warms up to 33°C and above, and rain at this time is a rarity. This is the ideal time for those who love the sun and warmth, as the number of rainy days at the height of summer is kept to a minimum.

Winter, conversely, brings coolness and precipitation. In January and February, the average temperature hovers around 2–4°C, and slight frosts are possible at night. If you are planning a trip during the winter months, it is worth bringing warm clothes and an umbrella, as this is the wettest period of the year. Spring and autumn serve as a pleasant transition with moderate warmth, ideally suited for comfortable excursions.

Temperature

The climate in Kahramanmaras is distinguished by pronounced seasonality, offering tourists a variety of weather conditions depending on the time of year. The coldest period is winter, especially January, when the average air temperature is about 2.0°C. At this time of year, nights are often frosty, with readings down to -1.8°C, whilst during the day the air warms up on average to 5-6°C. Travellers planning a visit in winter should definitely take warm clothing with them.

Summer, on the other hand, is characterised by hot and dry weather. The sweltering months are July and August, when daytime highs regularly reach the 33.6°C mark. Precipitation during the summer period is practically absent, creating an effect of dry heat. However, even on the hottest days, the nights bring welcome coolness: the temperature after sunset drops to a comfortable 19-20°C, creating a significant contrast with the daytime heat.

Spring and autumn serve as pleasant transitional seasons with moderate warmth. In May and September, the average temperature holds at the level of 17-23°C, which is perfect for excursions and long walks. It is worth noting that the range of fluctuations between daytime and nighttime temperatures remains high throughout the year, so a light jacket may come in handy in the evening even after a sunny spring day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Kahramanmaras is distributed unevenly throughout the year, forming clearly defined wet and dry seasons. Winter and the beginning of spring are the "wettest" times: the rainiest month typically becomes January, when about 14 days with precipitation are recorded. Considering that nighttime temperatures in January and February drop below zero, rains during this period are often replaced by snowfalls, covering the city and surrounding mountains in a white blanket.

Spring continues the winter trend, especially in March, when the number of inclement days reaches 13, but by May rains become less frequent and warmer. Autumn begins with dry weather, however, by November humidity increases, and travellers should expect about 8 rainy days per month. This is a transitional period when the weather can be changeable.

Summer in the region is characterised by pronounced aridity. July and August are the driest months of the year: at this time the probability of precipitation is reduced to a minimum, and the number of rainy days amounts to just about one for the whole month. This is the ideal time for those who prefer stable sunny weather and plan long walks in the fresh air without an umbrella.

What to Pack

When preparing for Kahramanmaras, it is important to consider the distinct seasonality of the local climate. Winter here is cool and quite humid, with temperatures sometimes dropping below zero, so a warm jacket, a hat, and waterproof shoes will be simply essential. Since it often rains during the winter months and early spring, do not forget to put a compact umbrella or a high-quality raincoat in your suitcase.

Summer, conversely, welcomes travellers with hot and dry weather, when the daytime temperature often exceeds 30°C. For a trip in the period from June to September, light clothing made from natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, is perfectly suitable. Be sure to take care of sun protection: take a head covering, sunglasses, and cream with a high SPF level with you, as there is practically no rain at this time.

For comfortable walks along city streets and sightseeing, choose comfortable footwear with stable soles. If your trip is planned for spring or autumn, it is best to stick to the principle of layering in clothing. During the day it may be warm enough for a t-shirt, but by evening the air cools down, so a light sweater, windbreaker, or cardigan will make your walks much more pleasant.
