The airport's heyday occurred in the 1980s. During this period, it experienced a real boom: up to 100 flights were performed daily, connecting the city with many corners of the former Soviet Union. An important milestone in history was 1986, when the airport was granted international status, opening new prospects for development. The 2,500-metre runway allowed it to accept various types of aircraft, including the Tu-154, Il-76, and Boeing 737.

After the collapse of the USSR, like many regional airports, KWG faced a significant decline in passenger traffic and a reduction in the route network.
