About the Country

Ukraine is a country with a rich history and diverse landscapes, located in Eastern Europe. It attracts travellers with its hospitality, vibrant culture, and picturesque nature, offering a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern life. It is one of the largest countries in Europe by area, which contributes to the diversity of its regions and tourist opportunities.

The heart of the country is its capital, Kyiv, a city with a thousand-year history, majestic cathedrals, and lively streets. Here, you can feel the spirit of antiquity while enjoying the dynamism of a modern metropolis. Ukraine's cultural heritage is vividly expressed in its music, folk crafts, architectural monuments, and, of course, its famous Ukrainian cuisine, which is a must-try. For visitors seeking halal options, a variety of restaurants and food outlets are available in major cities.

Beyond the capital, Ukraine offers many interesting places to visit. For example, the charming Lviv with its medieval architecture, cosy coffee shops, and old-European atmosphere, or the vibrant Odesa on the Black Sea coast, known for its unique sense of humour and the famous Potemkin Stairs. From the picturesque Carpathian Mountains in the west to the vast steppes in the south and east, Ukraine can surprise and charm every traveller.

Currency

The national currency of Ukraine is the Ukrainian hryvnia (international code UAH). Hryvnia banknotes are decorated with portraits of prominent Ukrainian historical and cultural figures, as well as images of architectural monuments. Banknotes of various denominations and coins, called kopiyky, are in circulation. The hryvnia is the only legal tender in the country.

You can exchange foreign currency for hryvnia at banks, official exchange offices, which are widespread in cities, and also at some hotels. It is recommended to compare rates at several locations and to avoid exchanging money with private individuals on the street due to the risk of fraud. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted for payment in many places, especially in major cities: in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels and at petrol stations. However, it is better to have cash on hand for small purchases at markets, in small shops, or on public transport.

Visa Requirements

When planning a trip to Ukraine, it is essential to familiarise yourself with the visa requirements in advance. Citizens of the United Arab Emirates can enjoy visa-free entry for stays of up to 90 days. However, for non-UAE citizens residing in the UAE, a visa may be necessary and this should be arranged beforehand through the official Ukrainian consular services. For any entry into the country, a valid passport is required. It is also standard practice to carry return flight tickets, confirmation of accommodation, and a valid medical insurance policy, though it is always wise to confirm the latest specific requirements before travelling.

Visa policies are subject to change, so we strongly recommend that you check the most current information on visa needs and entry conditions before your trip. This can be done on the official websites of the Ukrainian consular missions in the UAE or the official portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings and ensure your travel preparations are as smooth as possible.

Time Zones

Ukraine operates on a single time zone, Eastern European Time (EET), which is UTC+2. For residents and travellers from the UAE, this means Ukraine is two hours behind UAE time (UTC+4) during the winter.

Like many European nations, Ukraine observes daylight saving time, known as Eastern European Summer Time (EEST), when clocks are moved forward by one hour to UTC+3. This reduces the time difference with the UAE to just one hour. The switch to summer time typically happens on the last Sunday of March, and the return to standard winter time occurs on the last Sunday of October. For travellers, this single time zone simplifies planning, as there is no need to change your watch when moving between Ukrainian cities. However, it is important to be aware of the daylight saving changes if your travel dates are around late March or late October to ensure you have the correct times for flights, transport, and opening hours for attractions.

How to Get There

It is crucial for travellers from the UAE to be aware that all civilian air travel to and within Ukraine has been suspended since February 2022 due to the ongoing conflict. The airspace remains closed, and major international bodies have issued total flight bans due to military activity.

There are ongoing discussions and plans about potentially reopening some airports, like Lviv or Boryspil (Kyiv), possibly in early 2025, but this is entirely dependent on the security situation and official decisions. As of late 2024, the Ukrainian Prime Minister has stated that it is impossible to open the airspace due to security concerns.

Before planning any travel, you must consult the latest official travel advisories from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Historically, there were several main ways to get to Ukraine, with the choice depending on your location and preferences. For international travellers, air transport was traditionally the most common option.

Currently, entry into Ukraine is only possible via land borders from neighbouring countries. Travellers from the UAE would need to fly to an airport in a country bordering Ukraine, such as Poland (e.g., Warsaw or Rzeszów), Hungary (e.g., Budapest), or Romania, and then continue their journey by train or bus.

Ukraine was served by several international airports, with the main gateway historically being the capital's Boryspil International Airport (KBP) in Kyiv, which acted as the primary hub. Air routes used to connect the country with many cities in Europe, Asia, and North America, offering both direct flights and convenient connections. Other major cities, such as Lviv, Odesa, and Kharkiv, also have airports that handled international flights, providing access to different regions of the country.

Land transport is now the primary method for entering Ukraine. The country has an extensive railway network with international routes connecting it to neighbouring European states. International bus services are also a popular and often more budget-friendly option. For those who prefer sea travel, some Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea previously served passenger ferries, though this method was less common for the main flow of tourists and is currently not a viable option. Regardless of the chosen method, it is highly recommended to book tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure the best prices and availability.

Best Time to Visit

Ukraine is most welcoming to travellers during the high season, which typically falls in the summer months (June–August) and includes the warm month of September. During this period, the weather is predominantly sunny and warm, making it ideal for exploring cities like Kyiv, Lviv, or Odesa, as well as for enjoying outdoor activities. The advantages are clear: you’ll find the greatest number of opportunities for activities and sightseeing. However, it is worth noting that this is also the busiest tourist period, and as a result, prices for accommodation and some services may be higher.

The low season, or the shoulder seasons, covers late autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May). These periods are attractive for those who prefer a quieter holiday and more affordable prices. In spring, Ukraine is in full bloom, offering a chance to enjoy nature as it awakens, while autumn paints the landscapes in golden and crimson hues. Winter (December–February) brings cold weather and snow, especially in the northern and western regions. This creates a unique atmosphere but requires you to pack warm clothing. The downsides of the shoulder seasons and winter can include more unpredictable weather and potentially reduced opening hours for some tourist attractions.

The climate in Ukraine is quite varied due to its large territory. In the south, by the Black Sea, it is generally warmer with milder winters, whereas the western regions, including the Carpathian Mountains, have a more continental climate with distinct seasons and snowy winters. Therefore, when planning your trip, it is always wise to check the weather forecast for the specific region you intend to visit. Regardless of the season, the country is rich in natural beauty; the blossoming gardens of spring or the autumnal landscapes can be a wonderful addition to your journey.

Traditions

When planning a trip to Ukraine, it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with some local customs to ensure your interactions with residents are pleasant and respectful. Ukrainians are generally very hospitable and open. When being introduced, it is common to exchange a handshake while maintaining eye contact. Men often shake hands both when meeting and when saying goodbye. If you are invited to someone's home, it is considered good manners to bring a small gift for the hosts. This could be a cake, a box of chocolates, or flowers (always an odd number, as even numbers are for funerals). In conversation, Ukrainians value sincerity; learning a few simple phrases in Ukrainian, such as "Dobroho dnia" (good day) or "Dyakuyu" (thank you), will be warmly received. Try to avoid making strong judgements on sensitive topics if you do not know the person well.

When visiting churches and monasteries, it is important to observe the dress code, similar to visiting a mosque. Women are advised to cover their heads with a scarf, as well as their shoulders and knees. Men should wear trousers rather than shorts. In daily life, there are no strict rules for clothing, but a neat appearance is appreciated. At the dining table, Ukrainians follow general European etiquette. If you are offered food, try to sample every dish, as refusing may be seen as disrespectful to the host's efforts. While many traditional dishes contain non-halal meat, halal food is available, especially in larger cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv, which have dedicated halal restaurants and shops. Making toasts during meals is a common tradition. Among the most significant holidays in Ukraine are Christmas and Easter (Velykden), which are celebrated on a grand scale with rich feasts and beautiful folk customs, such as painting 'pysanky' (Easter eggs). Showing interest and respect for local traditions will always be received positively and will help you to gain a deeper understanding of the soul of Ukraine.

Entertainment

Ukraine offers its guests a variety of opportunities for leisure and entertainment. Fans of active pastimes can enjoy hiking in the picturesque Carpathian Mountains or water sports on the Black Sea coast, and skiing in the winter. The country's cultural life is rich: in major cities such as Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa, you will find numerous theatres, concert halls, historical museums and art galleries that introduce the country's rich heritage.

In the evening, the large cities come alive with a vibrant atmosphere. Kyiv, Odesa and Kharkiv are especially known for their excellent selection of cafes and restaurants catering to every taste. For visitors seeking halal options, major cities offer a good variety of Turkish, Middle Eastern, and local Crimean Tatar restaurants. For shopping enthusiasts, Ukraine is also an interesting destination: traditionally, visitors bring home vyshyvankas (traditional embroidered shirts), folk crafts, ceramics, and local delicacies. The main shopping streets and modern malls, such as Dafi Shopping Centre or Frantsuzkyi Bulvar in Kharkiv, or Forum Lviv in Lviv, are concentrated in the major regional centres.

Families with children will also find plenty to do in Ukraine. Many cities have beautiful parks for walks, for example, Taras Shevchenko Park in Kyiv or Taras Shevchenko Park in Odesa. You can also visit zoos, such as Kyiv Zoo, or various entertainment centres and water parks, which will provide a lot of positive emotions for both adults and children.
