How to Get to the Airport

Getting to Kharkiv International Airport (HRK) from the city centre is straightforward. The airport is located approximately 12 kilometres southeast of the centre of Kharkiv, and travellers have access to several convenient transport options to plan a trip according to their budget and preferences. When planning a journey through Ukraine, you can be assured that the city's transport infrastructure provides easy access to the region's main air gateway.

The most budget-friendly way to get to the airport is by public transport. Trolleybus No. 5 goes directly to the terminal, departing from the "Prospekt Gagarina" metro station. This is a reliable and inexpensive option. Additionally, fixed-route minibuses (marshrutkas, e.g., No. 115e, 119e, 255e) run in the direction of the airport and may be slightly faster than the trolleybus. Although there is no direct metro line to the airport, you can take the metro to the nearest station and transfer. On average, a trip by public transport from the city centre will take from 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the route and traffic situation.

For maximum comfort, especially if you are travelling with large luggage or at night, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is best. This is the fastest way to reach the airport—the trip from the centre takes about 20–30 minutes excluding traffic jams. Both official taxi services and popular ride-hailing apps operate in the city. The cost will be higher than public transport, but you get the convenience of "door-to-door" travel.

If you value independence and plan to travel around the region extensively, car rental is an excellent solution. Many rental companies have desks both at the airport and in the city centre, making it easy to pick up or return a vehicle. For those arriving at the airport in their own vehicle, convenient parking is provided. There are zones for short-term parking (for quick drop-off and pick-up of passengers) and long-term parking, where you can safely leave your car for the duration of your trip.

The choice of transport to the airport in Kharkiv depends on your priorities. To save money, choose the trolleybus or minibus. If speed and comfort are important, order a taxi. And for complete freedom of movement during your trip, a rented car is ideal. In any case, we advise leaving in advance to avoid rushing and to calmly complete all pre-flight formalities.

International Airport Kharkiv (HRK) is a modern and compact aviation hub with a structure that is intuitively easy for travellers to navigate. The complex consists of two main passenger terminals, each fulfilling a specific function.

The main passenger flow is handled by Terminal A. This is a modern building made of glass and metal where all standard procedures take place. The ground floor houses the arrivals area, check-in counters for certain flights, and baggage claim. The first floor is entirely dedicated to the departures area: here you will find the main check-in counters, aviation security and passport control points, as well as Duty Free shops and boarding gates. The space is clearly divided into zones for domestic and international flight passengers, which simplifies navigation.

Next to Terminal A stands the Old Terminal—a historical building that is an architectural monument. Following reconstruction, it is used primarily as a VIP Terminal for servicing private flights and delegations, offering passengers an elevated level of comfort and privacy. Transfer between Terminal A and the VIP Terminal is done on foot, as they are located just a few dozen metres apart.

Thanks to well-thought-out logistics and the airport's moderate size, completing all formalities does not take much time. For domestic flights, it is recommended to arrive at the airport 1.5–2 hours before departure, and for international flights—2.5–3 hours prior. This time is generally sufficient for calm check-in, baggage drop, security screening, and boarding.

Navigation at Kharkiv Airport will not cause difficulties even for inexperienced tourists. All signs are in Ukrainian and English, and staff are always ready to help and provide directions. For most travellers, interaction with the airport will be limited to one building—Terminal A—making it very convenient to use.

Airport History

The history of International Airport Kharkiv (HRK) is a vivid reflection of the history of aviation and the city itself. Founded in 1923, it is one of the oldest airports in Ukraine. Initially, air traffic operated from an airfield in the Sokolniki district, but with the growing popularity of air travel, the need for more modern and spacious infrastructure arose.

A key stage of development began in the post-war years. In 1954, a new terminal complex was opened at its current location. The old terminal building, designed in the Stalinist Empire style with characteristic columns and mouldings, became an architectural landmark in its own right. For decades, the airport served as a vital transport hub, connecting Kharkiv with dozens of cities throughout the Soviet Union.

The airport experienced a true renaissance during preparations for the EURO 2012 European Football Championship. A large-scale reconstruction was carried out: a modern terminal capable of handling a significantly increased passenger flow was built, and the old historical building was carefully restored and converted into a VIP terminal. Additionally, the runway was extended and modernised, allowing for the accommodation of larger aircraft types.

Among interesting facts from the airport's history is its initial role not only in passenger transport but also in postal services, which significantly sped up communication between the region and other parts of the country. After the 2012 modernisation, the airport repeatedly set records for passenger traffic, becoming a modern and comfortable aerial gateway opening Kharkiv to tourists and business travellers from around the world.

International Airport "Kharkiv" (HRK) offered passengers a full range of services to make waiting for a flight as comfortable and productive as possible. The terminal infrastructure was meticulously planned and met modern quality standards. Within its premises, various cafes and restaurants operated where one could have a quick snack or a full meal, as well as Duty Free shops with a wide assortment of goods.

For passengers valuing enhanced comfort, VIP lounges were provided. They offered a secluded atmosphere, complimentary snacks and beverages, fresh press, and other privileges. All waiting areas provided passengers with access to free Wi-Fi, and numerous charging stations for gadgets allowed travellers to stay connected at all times.

Financial matters could be easily resolved right in the terminal—passengers had access to bank branches, ATMs, and currency exchange points. To ensure safety and health, a medical point operated on the airport grounds.

For travellers with young children, a mother and child room was equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay with little ones. The airport was also fully adapted to serve passengers with reduced mobility, who were provided with special assistance and accompaniment at all stages.

If passengers had a long layover or an early departure, they could stay at one of the hotels located in the immediate vicinity of the airport. For business travellers, conference hall and business centre services were available.

Before the closure, passengers at Kharkiv Airport could find several convenient dining options. The majority of establishments were concentrated in Terminal A, which handled most flights, situated both in the public zone and in the departure zone after security control.

In the public area (landside), before passing through screening, cafes usually operated where one could enjoy coffee with fresh pastries or order light snacks. This was an excellent spot for those seeing off or meeting passengers. Here, one could leisurely have a sandwich or dessert while waiting for an arrival or before checking in for a flight.

After passing through passport and aviation security control, in the sterile departure zone (airside), the selection became wider. Passengers were offered lounges and cafes where they could spend time comfortably. The assortment included standard snacks and salads as well as more substantial dishes of European cuisine. Local cafes were suitable for a quick bite, while for a more substantial lunch, one could settle into a restaurant with table service.

Regarding cuisine, popular international dishes were mainly represented. Occasionally, elements of local cuisine could be found, but the main focus was on universal offerings. Passengers with specific dietary needs (such as Halal, vegetarian, or vegan) were advised to check for suitable options in advance, as specialised menus might have been limited. The price range at the airport was expectedly higher than the city average.

Most dining establishments operated in accordance with the flight schedule, opening early in the morning and closing after the departure of the last evening flight. This allowed for a meal at practically any time while flights were operating at the airport.

To ensure your journey through International Airport "Kharkiv" goes smoothly and without stress, make use of our tips. It is recommended to arrive at the airport well in advance: 2.5–3 hours before departure for international flights and 1.5–2 hours before domestic flights within Ukraine. This buffer will allow you to complete all necessary procedures without rushing.

To save time, use online check-in, which usually becomes available 24 hours before departure. With a printed or mobile boarding pass, you can immediately drop off your luggage at the Drop-off counter or, if travelling light, head straight to security control. When passing through screening, be prepared to present documents and remove laptops, tablets, and liquid containers from your hand luggage.

When choosing a seat on the plane, be guided by your preferences. Window seats (A, F) are perfect for those who enjoy admiring views during the flight. If freedom of movement and the ability to leave the cabin faster after landing are important to you, choose aisle seats (C, D).

Strictly observe the rules for carrying hand luggage. All liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of no more than 100 ml each. They should be packed in a single transparent resealable bag with a capacity of up to 1 litre. Sharp objects are prohibited in the cabin, and portable batteries (power banks) are permitted only in hand luggage.

Passengers with transfers should check with their airline in advance whether their luggage will be automatically transferred to the next flight. Upon arrival at the airport, follow the "Transit" / "Transfer" signs to avoid exiting into the general area and to reach the required boarding gate faster.

When passing through customs, the "Green" and "Red" channel system applies. If you do not have goods subject to declaration (for example, large sums of cash or expensive purchases), you can confidently proceed through the "Green" channel. Otherwise, you must select the "Red" channel and fill out a customs declaration.

To save a little money, bring an empty reusable bottle and fill it with water from drinking fountains after passing security control. Also, study options for getting from the airport to the city by public transport in advance—this can be significantly cheaper than a taxi.
