General Weather Overview

The climate of Uzhhorod can be described as mild temperate-continental, largely due to its fortunate location: the Carpathian Mountains shield the city from cold northern winds. This creates a unique microclimate here, which is often warmer and more pleasant than in neighbouring regions, making the city an attractive destination for tourism all year round.

Summer in Uzhhorod is usually warm and sunny, but without exhausting heat: in July and August, the air warms up to a comfortable average of 26°C. Winter here is generally short and mild, with temperatures often hovering around zero or slightly above. Severe frosts are rare, allowing for comfortable sightseeing even in January or February.

Spring arrives in the city quite early, and by May warm weather is established, while autumn offers prolonged mild warmth, especially in September when the average temperature holds at around 16°C. It is worth noting that rainy days are distributed fairly evenly throughout the year — ranging from 10 to 16 days per month — so a small umbrella will be a useful travel companion regardless of the season.

Temperature

The climate in Uzhhorod is notable for its mildness compared to many other regions, making it attractive to visit practically all year round. The winter period passes without extreme frosts: January is traditionally the coldest month, with the average temperature holding around -0.2°C, and nightly lows rarely dropping below -3°C. December and February often see positive temperatures during the day (up to +3.4°C and +5.1°C respectively), so winter can be described as moderately cool rather than severe.

The summer season in the city delights with warmth and abundant sunshine. The hottest months are July and August, when the air warms up to an average of +26...+27°C during the day. August is considered the peak of warmth with an average temperature of +21.3°C. Despite high daytime figures, exhausting heat is a rare phenomenon here. Travellers should take note of noticeable temperature fluctuations: even in the warmest summer months, nights bring welcome coolness as the thermometer drops to +15...+16°C.

The transitional seasons — spring and autumn — in Uzhhorod pass smoothly and comfortably. May and September offer practically ideal conditions for long walks: at this time, daytime highs reach a pleasant +20...+21°C. However, by November it becomes noticeably colder, with the average temperature falling to +5.2°C, preparing the city for the arrival of a mild winter.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Uzhhorod is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, without extremely arid periods, although its character and frequency change from season to season. Winter, especially December and January, sees the highest number of days with precipitation (up to 15–16 days per month). Given average temperatures around zero and below, snow or wet snow often falls during this time, creating picturesque winter landscapes, although rain is also possible during thaws.

Spring brings gradual warming and a slight decrease in the frequency of precipitation, especially in April, when the number of rainy days drops to ten. However, the beginning of summer marks a return of wet weather: June is one of the rainiest months of the year with approximately 15 days when an umbrella might be needed. Summer rains often take the form of warm downpours that refresh the air after the daytime heat.

The end of summer and the beginning of autumn can be called the most comfortable and relatively "dry" period. In August, September, and October, the number of days with precipitation stays at the minimum level for this region (about 10 days per month). This time is perfect for walks and sightseeing, as the likelihood of prolonged rains is lower than in early summer or winter.

What to Pack

When packing for Uzhhorod, it is important to consider the mild but rather humid climate of this region. Winters here are not too severe, with temperatures rarely dropping significantly below zero, but due to high humidity, the air may feel cooler. For a trip from December to February, we recommend taking a warm, windproof jacket, a hat, and gloves. Since precipitation in the form of rain or wet snow is quite likely (up to 16 days with precipitation in January), pay special attention to your footwear: it should be warm, comfortable, and definitely waterproof.

Summer in the city is usually warm and comfortable, with average highs around 26°C, so light clothing made of natural fabrics, sunglasses, and sunscreen will be very useful. Nevertheless, even in the warmest season, especially in June, rains are possible, so a compact umbrella or a light raincoat is worth keeping at hand. For spring and autumn, it is best to use the principle of layering: a combination of T-shirts, sweaters, and a light jacket will allow you to quickly adapt to weather changes throughout the day.

Regardless of the season, pack your most comfortable pair of shoes for long walks in your suitcase. The historic city centre is perfect for walking routes, and foot comfort will be the key to great impressions. Given the statistics, light precipitation is possible in any month, so the practicality of your wardrobe should be the priority to ensure nothing distracts you from exploring the sights.
