Follow I-94 to the Riverside Park Rd exit. Free and spacious parking is available for visitors right at the entrance.

For those who prefer public transport, the Bisibus system (routes #2 or #9) stops within walking distance of the park. If you are arriving at Bismarck Airport (BIS), it is most convenient to use a taxi or Uber—the ride of about 10 km takes no more than 20 minutes.

In the warmer months, you can also reach the zoo by bicycle using the well-maintained trails along the river. Travelers from other USA cities, such as Fargo or Minneapolis, are recommended to rent a car for more comfortable travel throughout the state.

This landmark owes its existence to the enthusiasm of a single family. In 1962, the Terry Cook family founded a small private zoo that was initially located right on their farm. Gradually, the animal collection grew, and in 1967, the zoo moved to its current location in Riverside Park, becoming an official non-profit organization.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the Dakota Zoo expanded rapidly, focusing on the fauna of the Great Plains. This helped create a unique regional identity that attracts tourists from all over the country. Over time, breeding programs for rare species like snow leopards and American alligators were introduced.

Today, the zoo holds prestigious AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accreditation and participates in numerous international biodiversity conservation projects. Its history is a journey from a private collection to a key scientific and educational hub in North Dakota.

To see all the exhibits and enjoy a leisurely walk around the grounds, you will typically need 3 to 4 hours. This is the optimal amount of time to meet the animals, visit the interactive zones, and take a ride on the aerial gondola.

If you are planning a visit with children, it is better to budget about 5 hours. This will allow you to not only watch animal feedings but also spend time at the petting zoo, playgrounds, or have a small outdoor picnic.

The Dakota Zoo welcomes guests daily. According to the official schedule, it is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Sunday. This consistent schedule makes it easy for tourists to plan their visit on any day of the week.
