Kirkwood Mall is the largest shopping center in the city of Bismarck and the second largest in the entire state of North Dakota, USA. Boasting over 850,000 square feet of space, it is deservedly considered the premier regional destination for shopping and leisure.

Under the roof of this massive complex, there are more than 90 stores, including both popular international brands and unique regional venues. It is home to the state's only H&M store, as well as vast retail spaces for giants like Target, Scheels, and J.C. Penney. What to Do

At Kirkwood Mall, everyone will find something to their liking, whether it's hunting for the latest fashion collections or active recreation. Start your journey by visiting the flagship stores: stop by Scheels for high-quality sporting goods or check out the selection at H&M. If you're looking for something for your home, the vast choice of furniture at I. Keating Furniture World and everyday goods at Target will not leave you indifferent.

For family leisure, the mall features the Tilt Studio entertainment zone, where both children and adults can spend time playing arcade games and enjoying attractions. If you feel tired, wander through the book maze at Barnes & Noble or visit the Gold's Gym fitness center if you prefer to stay in shape even during your trip.

The dining scene at the mall is represented by a variety of cafes and restaurants. You can grab a quick bite at Chick-fil-A or Blaze Pizza, enjoy fresh pastries at Panera Bread, or spend a cozy evening at Lucky’s 13 Pub. The variety of formats — from a food court to full-service restaurants — makes it easy to plan everything from a quick lunch to a family dinner.

Getting There

The shopping center is conveniently located at 706 Kirkwood Mall, making it easily accessible for both locals and visitors. If you are traveling by car, the most convenient way is to take I-94 (exit at Kirkwood Mall Blvd). The complex features ample free parking, so finding a spot is usually not an issue.

For those who prefer public transportation, the area is served by METRO Transit Bismarck buses. Stops are located within walking distance of the mall's main entrances. You can also always use taxi services or popular apps like Uber and Lyft.

If you are arriving by air, the trip from Bismarck Municipal Airport (BIS) takes only about 10–15 minutes. Thanks to its prime location, Kirkwood Mall can be quickly reached from most central hotels, and for residents of nearby blocks, it is even within walking distance.

History & Facts

The history of this retail giant began in 1970 when the Wachter family decided to create a modern shopping venue. The official opening took place in 1971, and at that time, the complex was called Kirkwood Plaza. The mall was named after Robert Kirkwood, who rose from being a manager at a local Woolworth store to the CEO of the entire corporation.

The building originally had a unique "Y" shape, and its first major tenants were Montgomery Ward and Woolworth. Interestingly, the Woolworth store in Bismarck was considered the largest single-story store of the chain in the world at the time of its opening. In 1980, Kirkwood Mall underwent a massive expansion that doubled its size and brought in giants like Target and J.C. Penney.

Over the decades of its existence, the center has been updated several times to stay current. Renovations in 2006 and 2018 refreshed the facades and interiors, and the tenant list has been constantly updated with new names, including the state's only H&M store. Today, the mall remains more than just a place to shop; it is an important historical and commercial hub around which the city's modern infrastructure has formed.

Time Needed

The amount of time you should allocate for a visit to Kirkwood Mall depends on your goals. If you only plan to visit a few specific departments or pick up an order, 1–2 hours will be quite enough.

However, for those who want to take their time browsing all 90 stores, have lunch at the food court, and perhaps visit the entertainment zone, it is better to set aside 2 to 4 hours. This will give you enough time to enjoy the atmosphere and make all your necessary purchases without rushing.
