Located in the heart of the historic center, this restaurant in the USA is famous for its approach to meat: they use only oak wood and local ingredients from Midwest farmers. The establishment's main pride is tender brisket and juicy ribs, which undergo a long smoking process to achieve that unique aroma and texture.

In 2024, Skinny's Barbeque officially cemented its status by winning the title for the best pulled pork sandwich in the state. A cozy atmosphere and generational continuity—the owner continues his grandfather's legacy started in the middle of the last century—make this place a must-visit for all meat delicacy lovers.

What to Do

The main ritual at Skinny's Barbeque is, of course, tasting their famous pulled pork sandwich. The pork is slow-cooked in the smoker for about 14–15 hours until it becomes perfectly tender, then served on a toasted brioche bun with homemade pickles. You can choose from three signature sauces—sweet, spicy, or tangy mustard—to bring the flavor to perfection.

For those looking for something unique, the menu features signature items like the Grilled Mac Daddy—an incredible combination of mac and cheese, smoked pork, and gouda on crispy bread. Also worth noting is the Noname Big Boy, where pork, brisket, and the famous "armadillo egg" meet under a delicate cheese sauce.

In addition to classic meals, you can order meat by the pound for a barbecue party at home or a picnic. The restaurant's atmosphere encourages long conversations, and the openness of the chefs and owner makes guests feel like part of a large family united by a love for good food.

Getting There

Finding Skinny's Barbeque is easy—the restaurant is conveniently located in the historic city center, just a couple of blocks from the picturesque Mississippi River waterfront. The exact address is 208 W 2nd St. If you are traveling by car, look for the intersection of the main streets in the downtown area; there is usually plenty of parking nearby.

For those who prefer public transport or a taxi, the ride from the city's central residential areas takes only a few minutes. If you are traveling between cities in the state, the most convenient way to reach Muscatine is via I-80 or US-61, which lead directly to the city blocks.

The establishment is within walking distance of other popular leisure spots; for example, it is just two blocks from the famous Boonie’s bar. This makes it a great stop during a walking tour of the old town.

History & Facts

The history of this place began relatively recently, in September 2019, when a young and ambitious local resident, Cord Kleist, decided to bring his passion for cooking to life. It all started with a simple Traeger grill given to him for his 21st birthday. Inspired by a trip to Austin and having studied the intricacies of Texas meat smoking, Cord decided to bring these traditions to his native Iowa.

Despite the owner's youth, there is a rich family history behind the restaurant. Cord's grandfather began working in the food and beverage industry back in 1951, and his father owns a popular sports bar nearby. Skinny's Barbeque became a continuation of this dynasty, growing from a family hobby into one of the most decorated establishments in the region.

True triumph came to the restaurant in March 2024. During the prestigious Pulled Pork Madness competition organized by the Iowa Pork Producers Association, Skinny's sandwich was named the best in the state. Beating out hundreds of competitors in a tense final, the establishment confirmed its status as a master of authentic barbecue throughout the Midwest.

Time Needed

For a full visit to Skinny's Barbeque, we recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours. This is plenty of time to leisurely browse the menu, place your order, and enjoy the taste of slow-smoked meat in a cozy setting. Usually, the wait for food doesn't take long, but the place's popularity during lunch hours might increase it slightly.

If you plan to stop by for a quick snack or want to take food to go for a picnic by the river, 30–40 minutes will suffice. In any case, this place is great for both a hearty family dinner and a quality lunch during a tourist route.

Working Hours

Skinny's Barbeque welcomes guests from Tuesday to Saturday. The doors are open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, which is convenient for both an early lunch and a late dinner. Please note that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Sundays.

Since the establishment is very popular and the amount of smoked meat prepared daily may be limited, we recommend checking the official website or social media page before your visit to ensure all menu items are available.
