This non-profit project has become a true cultural center for family leisure in Illinois.

What to Do

You definitely won't be bored in this museum! On the first floor, young guests will find Ferris Village — a detailed miniature town where children can try on the role of a banker or a postal worker. Creative minds are invited to Blick Art Studio, while at the Ferris Acres farm, you can not only learn how vegetables grow but also sit in the cab of a real combine harvester.

The second floor is dedicated to scientific discoveries and active play. Here you'll find the exciting WAVES water zone, an air maze, and a giant Lite Bright panel. In the science classroom, created with the support of OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois, little engineers can conduct physics experiments and solve logic puzzles, developing critical thinking through fun play.

Don't forget to check out the outdoor area! There you'll find a real railroad caboose (service car) and the Kids Crossing covered playground. The museum regularly updates its programs, offering workshops in painting, architecture, and agriculture, so every visit can be a unique experience for the whole family.

Getting There

Finding the Discovery Depot Children's Museum is quite easy, especially if you prefer traveling by rail. It is located at 128 S Chambers St, literally across the street from the Amtrak Galesburg station. This proximity makes it an ideal stop for those arriving in the city by train.

For car travelers, Galesburg is accessible via the main Illinois highways. Parking spaces are provided near the museum, eliminating the hassle of finding a spot downtown. If you are coming from nearby major cities such as Peoria or Moline (Quad City Airport), the drive by car or taxi will take about an hour.

Within the city itself, you can use taxi or rideshare services. However, the museum's closeness to the train station and the Galesburg Railroad Museum allows you to easily move between these points on foot, turning the walk into a small themed adventure.

History & Facts

The history of this educational center began in 1999 (although initiatives for its creation started as early as 1996). The Discovery Depot Children's Museum emerged as a non-profit organization driven by the dream of local residents to create a space where children could learn through hands-on experience — direct interaction with objects.

Over its more than twenty years of existence, the museum has expanded significantly and today occupies an impressive 14,000 square feet. Its development was made possible by the active support of the Galesburg community, volunteers, and donations, which allowed an old building to be transformed into a modern family leisure center.

Interestingly, the museum's architecture and themes are closely intertwined with the city's historical heritage as a major railroad hub. This is reflected in the presence of a real caboose and its proximity to the train station, emphasizing the importance of transportation in the region's development. The museum has become more than just a playground; it is the "heart" of education in Knox County.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy all the interactive zones and explore both floors of the museum at a relaxed pace, visitors are recommended to set aside at least 4 hours for their visit. This is enough time for children to try out different roles and participate in experiments.

If your trip has a tighter schedule, you should budget at least a couple of hours for the most popular exhibits, such as the water zone and the science classroom. However, experience shows that young explorers are very reluctant to leave the museum earlier than half a day, as the number of activities here is truly impressive.

Working Hours

The museum's operating schedule is fairly stable; however, please note that Discovery Depot is usually closed on Mondays. For the rest of the week, hours vary: from Tuesday to Saturday, the museum opens at 09:30 AM (at 10:00 AM on Fridays), and on Sundays — at noon.

Since the schedule may change due to holidays or private events (such as birthday parties), we strongly recommend checking the information on the official website before planning your trip.
