If you are looking for a piece of Europe in the heart of the USA, then the New Ulm Glockenspiel is a must-visit destination. This majestic 45-foot (13-meter) musical clock tower is located in the city of New Ulm. The structure is one of the few freestanding carillons of this size in the world and is a true architectural and cultural gem of Minnesota.
The main feature of the tower is its musical heart, consisting of 37 bronze bells cast in the Netherlands. Every fifteen minutes, they fill the surroundings with a melodic chime, and at specific times, they perform programmed melodies. Of particular interest are the 12 animated figures, approximately three feet tall, which rotate on a carousel to illustrate key moments in the history and daily life of local settlers: from the Dakota Indians to the first brewers and millers.
Located in the picturesque Schonlau Park, the Glockenspiel serves as a reminder of the city's deep German roots. It is not just a clock, but a unique mechanical theater that combines the ancient art of bell-making with modern digital sound control technology.
