Hand luggage screening is not the one everyone goes through when entering the airport building, but the one you need to pass after checking in for your flight to enter the sterile zone and then board the plane. Screening can take a long time due to queues, and also due to a lack of preparation for it.

So, how to pass screening quickly and easily?

  • At security, you can only have items allowed in hand luggage (article about this) โ€” and what you want to take on the plane. Everything else must be checked in as baggage beforehand. Double-check that your hand luggage does not contain liquids over 100 ml, aerosols, or sharp objects. If you are carrying small volumes of liquids in your hand luggage (e.g., a special travel cosmetic bag), place them on top of other items in advance so they are easier to remove during screening.

  • Place your hand luggage in a special plastic tray for screening; place the bag or cosmetic bag with liquids separately. If you are carrying a laptop or other electronic devices in your hand luggage, remove them and place them in a separate tray. Place your mobile phone there as well.

  • Remove all metal items, including watches and belts. If you are flying in outerwear, it must also be removed and placed in a tray.

  • If you are wearing bulky shoes or high heels, be prepared to be asked to remove them and send them on the conveyor belt in a separate tray. Shoe covers are usually available in the screening area, which you should use while barefoot.

  • After sending all your belongings onto the conveyor belt, pass through the gate and follow the instructions of the staff.

  • Do not pass through the gate if you have a pacemaker โ€” inform the security staff so they can check you personally. Also, notify staff about any metal implants in your body (titanium plates, etc.).

  • Do not forget your belongings in the screening area! If you have many items, count the number of trays used so you don't miss anything.
