What to see in Gelendzhik
Summer is not summer without a beach by the sea and a golden tan. Fortunately, you can get all this and even more without leaving Russia. For example, tourists have found an alternative and are taking tickets to Sochi for a walk under palm trees and a prime spot by the water. However, if you're tired of the same old views and want something new, then this article is for you.
Gelendzhik is very often overlooked in favor of Anapa. Which, by the way, is a great pity. Firstly, the resort is considered one of the best in the country and is often ranked alongside Russia's warm cities. Secondly, in addition to beach holidays, there are plenty of entertainment options in the surrounding areas and the city center.
In general, we recommend you start thinking about what to pack for your vacation now, as summer is just around the corner. And we will tell you in detail about what to see in Gelendzhik and help fill your holiday with new colors.
Main Attractions of Gelendzhik
Gelendzhik Bay
Probably the most important location to visit first. Especially if you've been dreaming of a beach holiday. Believe me, this place will be a true paradise: a long coastline with all comfortable conditions and a gentle entry into the Black Sea. In short, it's the perfect place to go in Russia in summer to avoid suffering from the heat.
In case you don't really feel like swimming, we recommend climbing the Markotkh Ridge, which offers a beautiful panorama of the city and Gelendzhik Bay.
Embankment
A gathering place for youth and newly arrived tourists. It's no secret that the embankment in Gelendzhik is very beautiful (and long, a full 14 meters) and clean. This effect is created by the snow-white stone from which literally everything here is built – from lampposts to railings.
It will be especially cool to bring friends and spend an evening surrounded by bright lights with live music in one of the cafes by the sea.
Central City Beach
A must-visit place in Gelendzhik if golden beaches and a pleasant sea breeze have been sorely missing from your life. People come from all over the country just to lie on the Central City Beach for at least an hour. Therefore, to fully enjoy your holiday, we recommend occupying your preferred spots early in the morning.
By the way, you won't confuse the beach entrance with anything else – just look for the large white arch, and you definitely won't get lost.
Museums
Historical and Local Lore Museum
You can get acquainted with the historical component of the city in museums. For example, the Historical and Local Lore Museum is one of the main cultural attractions to see in Gelendzhik. Guides and staff will gladly tell you about the resort's past and show you the most significant exhibits.
Of interest: exhibitions are constantly changing, so no matter how many times you've been here, you'll always find something new and interesting.
Marine Museum
Fortunately, a trip to the Marine Museum can be combined with a visit to "Safari Park". They are located on the same territory, so you can get acquainted with exotic animals and exciting sea battles in one day.
The first exhibition hall tells about famous navigators and their discoveries, while the next one displays medieval and modern models of various ships.
Churches
Ascension Church
Even if you don't want to go inside, we recommend looking at the Ascension Church from a distance. On sunny days, the light beautifully falls on the snow-white walls, and the building seems to glow. And the nearby shore and promenade will be an excellent addition to your stroll.
Holy Transfiguration Church
Another interesting place from our small list of what to visit in Gelendzhik is the Holy Transfiguration Church. Its exterior catches the eye even of a casual passerby: a tower with a golden dome rises above the roof, and the main colors in the exterior are red and white.
City Attractions
"The White Bride"
Actually, there are two translations for the name Gelendzhik: "small pasture" and "white bride". The latter was so popular with visitors that in 2010, a bronze statue of a bride was even installed here. Over time, it became a symbol of the city, and taking a photo with it upon arrival is a must for travelers.
"Gelendzhik" Sign
A reference to Hollywood or just big letters. Whatever this sculpture was called, the meaning remained the same. A giant "Gelendzhik" sign was installed on one of the slopes of the Markotkh Ridge. It is visible not only if you climb the mountain yourself but also from space.
By the way, for comparison: the height of the "Gelendzhik" sign is 22 meters, and the "Hollywood" sign is 15 meters.
"Rio de Gelendzhik"
There have been many references in Gelendzhik. It's not hard to guess that "Rio de Gelendzhik" is a nod to Rio de Janeiro. True, instead of a statue of Jesus, there's a large cross, but it's also located on a hill and faces the city. In short, it's quite indistinguishable.
Monument to the Tourist
You can recognize yourself right in the center of Gelendzhik: the monument to the tourist is located very close to the embankment, and visitors constantly take photos there. Take a picture with it for good luck – it certainly won't hurt.
By the way, if you want to add some wellness treatments, we recommend visiting "Krasnaya Talka" – it's one of the best sanatoriums in Russia, and it's also very close by.
Parks
Andreevsky Park
No need for extra words: Andreevsky Park is very beautiful and green. It somewhat resembles Peterhof with its neatly laid paths, walking areas, and overall atmosphere. It's best to come here for a whole day: the territory is truly vast.
Just in case, let's say right away: there are no shops here. So, if you want to have a picnic or are afraid of getting hungry on the way, be sure to bring something with you. Otherwise, all your thoughts will be occupied with things other than what they should be.
Central Park
Parks with entertainment are not uncommon in Gelendzhik. In Central Park (also known as City Park), you'll find attractions for children and adults. Don't expect anything super extreme, but count on a good time and beautiful photos.
Interesting Places in the Vicinity of Gelendzhik
Plesetskiye Waterfalls
One of the most beautiful locations to visit in Gelendzhik. To see the Plesetskiye Waterfalls, you'll have to go out of town. Fortunately, you can do this by taxi (just don't forget to charge your phone – the place is truly beautiful, and you won't be able to resist taking photos).
Of interest: the gorge from which the water flows has a very interesting name: Valley of a Hundred Waterfalls. However, how many there actually are is unknown. There are about twenty large ones, and as for the small ones... No one has managed to count them yet. Maybe you'll be the first to do it?
Sail Rock
Nature creates truly beautiful and unusual things. Some of its creations even give a sense of unreality: surely something like this cannot exist in the world...
Sail Rock is a natural attraction of Gelendzhik. It is... a wall. Yes, it's that simple: a flat wall standing not far from the village of Praskoveevka. From a distance, the rock resembles a sail, hence its name.
You can get to the attraction by taxi. However, we advise booking a return car to the city right away. The mobile signal here is poor, so it's better to arrange your return to a cozy hotel room in advance.
Where to Go with Kids
Golden Bay Water Park
Oh, well, there are no options here: your child will definitely be thrilled to go to the water park. And why hide it! You probably wouldn't mind riding water slides in the sun and surrounded by bright colors either.
By the way, there are many slides here, and they cater to every taste and preference: some are more extreme, some are calmer... In short, neither you nor your children will be bored.
Olympus Park
We recommend closing the gestalt and delighting your inner child. Olympus Park is a great place to spend a whole day with your family. There are so many entertainments here that you won't want to go home even after closing.
In short, the park's territory is divided into two parts: upper and lower. Downstairs, there's a bowling club, a planetarium, a concert hall, and the "Call of the Jungle" petting zoo. Upstairs is the most interesting part: attractions, a children's town, and a small pond where you can ride swan boats.
Dolphinarium
Children really love animals, and a trip to the Gelendzhik Dolphinarium will definitely appeal to them. Firstly, you can spend a hot day near the water, and secondly, the dolphins will entertain your little companions with unusual tricks and joyful greetings.
Where to Go in Gelendzhik in the Evening
Singing Fountain
Thanks to its location, Gelendzhik is rightly considered one of the warmest cities in Russia. Fortunately for all opponents of such weather, the heat subsides by evening, and walking becomes more comfortable. Moreover, when a light show is arranged, it's doubly cool near the water. Thus, after sunset, tourists rush to the singing fountain in Pervomaysky Park to listen to over 20 melodies and enjoy the sunset.
Leonid Pleshkov Palace of Culture, Art, and Leisure
You can, of course, visit the Palace of Culture, Art, and Leisure during the day. It has a beautiful walking garden, and the exterior is magnificent, inspired by 19th-century architecture. However, we recommend going here after sunset. Firstly, you'll be able to pass a couple of hours before bedtime, and secondly, the performances here are very spectacular and atmospheric.
Where to Go in Gelendzhik in Bad Weather
Tunnel Oceanarium
Nothing spoils a cherished vacation like a sudden change in weather. However, even for such a case, we have a top option of where you can go both alone and with your family.
The oceanarium in Gelendzhik is large: various fish of all colors and sizes swim here, and all the tunnels are beautifully decorated according to the general theme.
"White Horse" Gallery
The "White Horse" Gallery will be very appealing to lovers of contemporary art. Its large area and a huge number of exhibits will distract you from thoughts of bad weather and immerse you in a world of artistic fantasies.
In general, the goal of this gallery is to draw attention to environmental issues. Therefore, the main material for creating exhibits is recycled raw materials, which have been given a second life and transformed into something beautiful.
Hotels
We've told you where to go. Now it's time to tell you where you can relax after your walk:
- "Metropol Grand Hotel Gelendzhik" is suitable for those who want more sea and beaches from their trip. There is a swimming pool on site, and around it is a large green area where you can relax from the hustle and bustle and simply enjoy the place;

- City Plaza is located in the city center, making it easier to reach iconic attractions from here. By the way, this hotel has a rooftop pool. Just imagine: you, the city panorama, and the sun setting beyond the horizon.
