What to see in Nikola-Lenivets Park
We are sure that during Maslenitsa, no one missed the cool videos of a giant effigy being burned, with people dancing around it in traditional Russian costumes. This splendor happens annually in Nikola-Lenivets, a village near Kaluga.
However, besides winter fun, summer activities are also often held here, which you should definitely visit at least once. In this article, you will learn why buying tickets to Kaluga and heading to the art park is a great travel idea.

Art Objects
On the territory of the Nikola-Lenivets art park, covering more than 650 hectares, modern art enthusiasts will find plenty to explore. Here you can choose what you like, for example, listen to lectures and see works by sculptors, artists, and architects. An especially rich program awaits those who plan to visit summer festivals in 2025 and royally arrive from July 25 to 27 for the local “Archstoyanie”.
Lighthouse
The Lighthouse is a fundamental object of the park, reaching a height of 18 meters. It was assembled without a single nail on a bend of the Ugra River (where the Great Stand on the Ugra River between Moscow troops and the Great Horde took place in 1480). The object was built from intertwined dried elm branches. At night, the lighthouse lights up, and the place becomes a local paradise for a romantic gathering.
Rotunda
At the highest point of the park stands a rotunda, which sharply contrasts with the surrounding rural area. The object is a round wooden building with three tiers: the lower one has 21 doors, the middle one has windows offering picturesque views. The third level symbolizes freedom and the observer's rapprochement with the boundless heavens.
Universal Mind
Imagine a large brain with a diameter of 14 meters. We're sure you've already thought of whom you might advise to use it more often. But in Nikola-Lenivets, they decided to create it from wooden beams resting on a mirrored podium. This is how artist Nikolay Polissky interpreted a humanistic version of a huge computer that could analyze all data on Earth.
Beaubourg
This art object refers to the French Beaubourg district, where the Pompidou Centre, a museum of modern art, is located. Climbing to the observation deck of “our” Beaubourg, you will see all of Nikola-Lenivets. The same principle applies if you decide to view Paris from the Pompidou's roof.
Red Forest
The Red Forest is not only a conceptual art object referring to the avant-garde movement but also a practically useful attribute of Nikola-Lenivets. You can cross from the old part of the park to the new, and vice versa, via the “Red Forest” bridge. Traversing the bridge is quite easy, but art connoisseurs prefer to descend into the ravine to appreciate the view from a distance. As we've long known, great things are seen from afar.
How to get there
The easiest way to start your journey to Kaluga is by train, but you can also buy tickets to Kaluga on Kupi.com.
By car
If you decide to drive to the park , you will need to cover about 200-220 km along the Kievskoye or Minskoye Highway. From Kaluga, the journey will be approximately four times shorter — about 60 km.
By commuter train
From Kiyevsky railway station, take commuter trains on the Kiyevsky direction to Obninsk, Maloyaroslavets, Tikhonova Pustyn, or Kaluga-1, Govardovo stations. From there, you will need to hire a taxi to Nikola-Lenivets village.
What to do
- attend “Archstoyanie,” which will take place from July 25 to 27 in 2025. This event is one of the most significant of the year for Nikola-Lenivets. Young people and families come here to see the landscape art objects. Year after year, artists erect new architectural structures, but guests also come to see the monumental objects of the park;
- have a delicious lunch at the “Ugra” cafe. Of course, there's a classic menu that doesn't change. But fans of something new and unusual, coming to Nikola-Lenivets every year, expect to taste signature dishes. Food is prepared from farm products to support local productions;
- rent a bicycle and ride around the park. This way you can both exercise and explore the objects you're interested in faster. For family visitors, it's also a great separate leisure activity with children;
- take guided tours with a group. An excellent opportunity to meet pleasant people and learn something unusual about contemporary art in Russia;
- go on a rendezvous with an audio walk. A great option for introverts and fans of walking with headphones, listening to something informative. The route is built through the forest, Versailles Park, and the Rotunda — you will definitely be satisfied.
Where to stay
A special pleasure is the Nikola-Lenivets houses. Guests can choose from comfortable houses for accommodation, which are also architectural art objects. Here you need to rely on your taste to settle into the most interesting and convenient lodging.
When to visit
Any time of year. The park itself can be entered from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM local time. The park operates daily and around the clock. To enter the territory, you need to buy two tickets: an entrance ticket to the art park (400 rubles) and a permit to visit the Ugra National Park (200 rubles). By the way, Nikola-Lenivets can be classified as one of the parks in Russia worth taking children to.
Important: during festivals, the park is closed for free access, so you will need to buy a ticket for the event.
Tips for tourists
- plan your visit around festivals if you want a unique experience. Be prepared, however, that accommodation will need to be booked in advance and there will be many people. Upcoming summer events include “Archstoyanie” in July and the Signal contemporary music festival;
- expect that you will hardly manage without a personal car or taxi. During peak times, prices may increase, and local taxi drivers will take you to the park, whose prices for transportation can be quite spontaneous;
- don't forget to bring some national costume to the festivals. Just for fun, to join a cool themed party.
Done! You've just embarked on a cool import-substituted journey!
